Oil could be lost throught the valve guides and or seals. A short block reuses the original heads.

Since I have started my oil consumptiontest I have driven 250 miles and not a single drop gone on the dealership oil. Could my problem been with the Mobil 1 oil?? Yet others hav had no problems at all with Mobil 1...

confused...
It could be.

Many people I know that track/autoX/rally their cars and run Mobil 1 oil have noticed the same consumption phenomenon.

It might be worth the try to run a different oil. But personnaly, and assumming the oil consumption is from the "ring leak" I've described, I'm not worried. I'd prefere to have some oil leak into the combustion chamber from a surplus on the cylinder wall than the rings running dry.

Surprised it took that long for someone to say that. I have NEVER been able to get a real good read off of our dipstick especially with newer oil. My first question would be are you 100% SURE you are reading the dipstick properly. Are you getting any oil on it? As long as it is between the L and the F then you are not low on oil. Now if it comes out dry then there is a problem.

If you are asking me, the answer is "yes I am absolutely sure I read the dipstick properly" AND the tech at the dealer agreed with my assessment. Only the very tip of the dipstick had oil on it, which is maybe a half inch lower than the L mark on the stick.

^Scary!!!

I had the same amount of oil in my Z this last weekend when I changed it. Just a little over a quart of oil came out when I drained the engine. I'm not sure what happened but this last 5,000 mile period I burned through so much oil than I normally do. I should take my Z in to get inspected.

What exactly do you mean by this statement?

Why after 3 tries are they just replacing the short block? My engine blew due to oil consumption so of course the entire engine had to be replaced but I had no problems after that.. I even went FI on the second engine with no problems.

Literally under a rock, sold my car to get my business going and I've been working on that night and day. Now that a newer G35 is coming out I'm anxious to read the forums again.

Alot of it comes down to how the car was run-in.
if lightly, then the car will use alot more oil than one that was thrashed from new.
We have a New Beetle.. 1l per 600miles is acceptable according to VW/Audi.

All of you with oil consumption should try running amsoil synthetic. I run their 5w-40 euro synthetic and have no consumption. Also when i switched from dyno oil the car was noticeably more quiet during acceleration and much smoother on start-up. I love it

I had my shortblock replaced due to oil consumption that turned out to be a leaky 1-3 and 5 cylinder after a leakdown test. I was running mobil 1 synthetic and noticed it would burn off a lot faster than regular castrol 5w30 dino oil. I got my motor replaced and went back to regular castrol. I have not burned any oil since the motor replacement. You should NOT be burning any more than 1 qt per 3k miles IMO or something is wrong. New motor or not, I didnt burn off any oil when i got my motor replaced. If I got my motor replaced 3 times I would lemon law the car in a second. I was very close to doing it when I had my motor replaced once, but I thought I would give it a chance and so far its been a great motor. If it goes bad again though I am going to lemon law the car.

Goodluck.

I broke my engine in very carefully for 1200 miles, making sure I didn't go above 4K rpms, but I would WOT from idle to 4K....my engine doesn't consume a drop. High RPM's can kill a brand new engine.

Oil rings seat right away. Its the compression rings that seal better over time.

I took my car to jiffy lube where they told me I should go with 5W-30 synthetic. They could not have been more wrong. With the Z you should use at the very least 10W-30 non-synthetic; I am now using 20W-50 because my engine went through 6 quarts of oil in 330 miles and has developed compression problems. The point is don't use synthetic.

6qts in 330 miles??
Synthetic is not the cause of your high oil consumption. Take that car to the dealer for a warranty engine swap.

With that kind of oil consumption I'm surprised your engine even starts

Well, thats only part of the story. Another problem caused the loss of compression. The light weight synthetic oil only made the matter worse. I don't think I can take my car to the dealer for warranty work because of the mods I've done (headers, dual exhaust, high-flow cats, plenum, CAI, Unichip ECU, clutch, flywheel). I'm taking it up to Scott Performance tomarrow.

Well ive been running 5w-40 in my car for quite some time now ~10k miles. Never consumes a drop. In fact i put synthetic in there on purpose to find out of my engine leaks or not. Yes synthetic leaks easier but the point is the engine shouldnt leak at all (within reason). All im doing is making sure everything is ship shape in my engine and it is. All dyno oil can do is help mask a problem that is already there.
