Default Problem with KJR pulley

I took the Z to the dealer to have the recall fixed and have an oil leak checked out. They told me the oil leak is coming from the crankshaft seal. Could the pulley have caused this? I have put on about 5k miles with the pulley with no problems until last week. could the seal have been damaged when the pulley was installed? If so how.
Also, this will probally not be fixed under warrenty. Is it hard to replace? Can anyone tell me what's involved if I were to replace the seal myself.I haven't found out how much the dealer is going to charge me to fix the seal, but I just know they will bend me over if I have them fix it.

Thanks for your help,
Matt

if the pulley was installed wrong, yes it can damage the seal/engine/crank/etc..

How could it be installed wrong? Doesn't it basically just slide on.

I would wonder how you could install it wrong also. I guess maybe if you torqued it wrong.

I meant old pulley removed properly and new one installed and torqued to proper specs. If it's not torqued properly it will come loose and damage the seal, there is atleast a couple of threads of people not torquing the pulley properly and ending up in your situation.

I don't see how a pulley could damage the seal otherwise. Beside someone installing it wrong

Is it hard to change the seal? Is the torque spec still 36 ft/lbs?

Others have had the problem. Check out the North Central Forum here under the Detroit List page.

OH HE||S NO! 36 ft/lbs on the instructions are WRONG! IIRC the proper spec is 36 ft plbs PLUS an additional 60 degreee turn. I think it's something like 100-120 ft lbs. i torqued mine to 120 ft lbs...no problems so far

exactly... here is the thread about the wrong instructions. Incidently, I was the one that pointed out the issue .

My instructions didn't say anything about the extra 60 degree turn. Does anyone know what KJR would do for a problem like this, since it's their fault? I plan on contacting them tomorrow.

Can anyone tell how difficult it is to replace the seal?

Thanks,
Matt

Here are current instructions with spec'd torque values.

http://kjrperformance.com/docs/KJR%20350Z%20Crank%20Pulley%20Install.pdf#search='kjr%20pull eys'

>Can anyone tell how difficult it is to replace the seal?

On this forum someone found the crank seal for ~$10 and used needle
nose plyers to remove it and a wide driver to push in a new one.

You could go safe with a Fluidampr pulley (search).

Good luck!

I handle product-liability litigation claims here in Florida, but I am not an attorney. I'm also unfamiliar with Michigan law. That being said, if they printed incorrect instructions and you installed according to them, well, KJR should owe for any repairs.

Find your receipt; find your instructions; get your paperwork from Nissan over the seal, then contact KJR in writing and by phone to see what's what. Do not repair/replace anything further w/o documenting what has been done and taking pictures...
