Recently I havent been able to engage 5th with out great effort and numerous tries.
When I move the shifter to the far right the area where 5th gear is normally engaged it will instead engage 3rd gear and go into the 3rd gear postion as 3rd engages anywhere with in the upper middle-right area.

There no problem with 5th gear (or any other) as when I do manage to engage it I cant detect any problems. 4th to 6th is fine and I can get into 5th from 6th but only then.

I discovered this problem 2 days ago when shifting to 5th at 100mph and instead engaging 3rd causeing the revs to go crazy and the car shut off .

Is there a know problem and fix as searching provided no help?
Or just some ideas I took the shifter apart and removed the rubber boot under the leather one but noticed nothing that can be adjusted.

Want to avoid going to the dealership any help would be appericated

 

I had this issues on my 2nd tranny, 5th was MIA. Your gonna have to go to the dealer man....

 

A buddy of mine got his stuck in 5th and it would not come out, but the shifter itself would come out! He took it to the dealer and they replaced his tranny with no hesitation. He was ONLY down for about a week to get his 2nd tranny replaced. You are going to have to go to the dealer.

 

Had a feeling it would be unavoidable going to the dealer, thanks for the info.

 

you can try taking off the shift boot and see if the gate plate has shifted. the plate is adjustable by screws/bolts
