Default Is Direct Injection a Good Idea?

Direct Injection:
By injecting gasoline directly into the combustion chamber, the newly designed direct injection system results in a more effective mixture of air and fuel. Not only does this boost overall power, but with the extra control over the air/fuel ratio, mileage is also significantly improved.

DI basically allows fuel into the chamber at the very last chance before the ignition, so no matter how high your compression is, or how lean your afr is, you dont preignite. This results in more power and better gas mileage.

This seems like a great idea, other than the HUGE amount of heat the motor must make. (The motor would be misfiring from the heat if it werent for the late injection)

So why have only Lexus and Audi come out with it? Why not Nissan?

Actually Nissan has had direct injection for the last four or five years. The VQ is even avail with it, the VQ25DD, not to mention all the QR versions. They're all overseas because of the poor quality of gas in the states.

So is it a mistake that Audi and Lexus use DI over here?

What do you mean is it a mistake? Are you asking if they haven't engineered the engines to run properly on our lower octane fuel? Of course they have. Nissan just hasn't done so yet, but they will. DI is a better way to go all the way around. Especially for turbo'd engines.

The Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky also have DI engines. I'm a big fan of DI, hopefully more is to come. Also there were a few VWs that had direct injection in the 70's.

Mazda is putting this motor in multiple vehicles and sharing the design with some other large manufacturer being used right now...can someone confirm, is it the sky/soltice mentioned above?

sounds great, but for those of us that already have Z's, why should we care? I mean is Nissan going to release a direct injection kit or something? Seems like it's something where the engine either does it or not

You can't get a "kit" unfortunately. Besides the ECM being different, the head design and compression ratio/pistons are different on a VQxxDE and a VQxxDD.

yeah I was assuming the only way to get direct ignition is to get a different car that has it - or wait and wait and wait for nissan to start doing it on the Z and buy one of those when they come out
