Default VQ35 and "other" engine

So I heard that there are actualy 2 model engines in the 350Z. I told a friend that now and days you can get a good stock Z for around $18000 to $20000 and he said that thats the one with the bad engine and all the tests that were done like in import tuner etc. it's been on the VQ35 engine and the lowest costing Z, I forgot the model name, is the one with the bad engine and the only ones that have the VQ35 are the higher priced ones. Can someone please explain this to me. Thank you.

He sure doesnt know nothing about cars yea in a way you can say they r two different motors but they r not same platform only one has different heads but its still a VQ35. So that makes it the same motor different head set up.

2003 and 2004 Zs all have the same motor (286 HP/274 lb/ft, 6750 RPM redline, variable intake cam timing only). In addition, 2005 Base, Enthusiast, Performance, 35th Anniversary autos, and 2006 autos have this motor. 2005 Track, 2005 35th Anniversary and all 2006 manual models have a revised engine (still a "VQ35DE" model 3.5L V6), but with 300 HP/260 lb/ft, 7000 RPM redline, variable intake and exhaust cam timing.

Both motors perform measurably almost identical. The "older" motor having a slightly stronger midrange and the revised motor having a slightly better topend.

For what its worth in the sake of the original post, all 350Zs have pretty much the same engine. Any 350Z you will buy came from the factory with a 3.5L naturally aspirated 24V DOHC V6.

Hey thanks, that's good to know. He said that all the tests on things like the Greddy turbo kit, etc. was done on the "top end" engines of the Z. Would the Turbo or products that are out fit on the older base platforms in this case. Yea, i've been a member on and off for about 2 years now and i'm currently in training for the Nevada Army Nationla Guard so a lot of us talk cars and I would like to maybe get an older Z if I can for when I get back so i'm double checking on everything before I jump in to finaly getting one. You've all been a great help.

I don't know of anyone putting a Greddy kit on a Rev-up yet but you can turbo the rev-up. Example look at Nitrouz. Almost 90% of FI owners don't own a rev-up, so yes can turbo a base model. The only thing thats not available for rev-ups are cams but I am sure they are coming soon. BTW your friend is a moron and should stick to reading Import Tuner for all his car info.
