Bro its a biatch! Once I got past all the work part of it I have to adjust the valves. That part was just too much for me! I had a shop adjust them. The VQ isnt the same as other motors Ive worked on. It uses valve caps and you need caps to match the gap. Its a pain in the ****!
As for tools. You'll just need the basics and a GOOD TQ wrench one with inch pounds.

depending on the cams you are putting in, will determine how hard it will be to reset your clearances. the nismo or jwt cams are designed to have the stock cam basecircles so you probably won't have to change anything. i didn't atleast.
you will need a service manual to get the timing chain correct when you put it back together. mark every single piece you remove in the correct orientation when you pull it off!!!! everything!!! the cam journals are line drilled and if you even get the same cap in the same place, but flipped 180 degrees, the cam will bind. don't pull the lifter buckets unless you have to change a couple out for correct clearance. mark you cam gears to each bank.
if you do all that, your cam install will go very smoothly. other than that, a 10mm socket will do 90% of the job. a couple 17mm and a few 12mm.
good luck
