Q: I hear a clicking sound sometimes. What is that?
A: Beware, however, of a slight metallic clicking sound coming from the rear of the car. It is due to the rear axle not being properly lubricated. If your car has this problem, you will usually hear this clicking sound when (1) in an enclosed space or driving near a hard wall, (2) driving without radio and with the window down (try turning off A/C if you still aren't sure), and (3) starting to move from a halt. The clicking sound is more pronounced while turning, or so it seems.
If you have the clicking, your car is due for a "Technical Service Bulletin" or "TSB" repair for rear axle clicking, which is covered under warranty. Take it to a dealer, and don't leave until they agree to fix it.
Did I help??

I've also read that the dealer fix is only temporary and the problem will return in approx. 2-3 months. From what I've also read, the problem is not dangerous in that something will break.

But as soon as you get it done you have a 1 year/20,000km warranty against it happening again

I just had my Z in the shop getting the rear axle click repaired. Simple process for any Z under warranty.
Just call your local dealership and explain the problem, most of them know exactly what it is and how to fix it, they will order the needed parts to do both sides of your rear axle. Make an appointment to take your car in, and it should only take about 1 1/2 hours to finish.

I have a creaking and clicking coming from the rear end, then again my Z does have 60k on her. It happens when I stop, go, turn or hit a bump. I made the appointment as suggested and was quoted $160 total for this job. They will warranty this service as mentioned. Wish me luck, cant wait to get rid of those annoying sounds. I have to drop her off tonight for a sleep over at the dealership so they can start working on her bright and early 2morrow
Mine returned and it is so bad it sounds like a bucket of screws when i hit small bumps at low speed, pulling into the drive way, starting from standstill... etc. I'm going to address the issue again once I get new brakes and tires.
So what if you are like me with a BASE version Z, and have LSD...
I have the Cusco LSD, which means I have the VLSD axle stubs and not the BASE axle stubs...
Will the Nissan dealer still replace/fix my clicking sound?

Anywho, I have the Cusco 1.5 Way LSD with VLSD Axle Stubs which are needed for use with that LSD.
My concern earlier was that the dealer was not going to replace what was needed because of my aftermarket LSD and non-Base version axle stubs.
Though after visiting the dealer today, it is the outer axle and wheel bearings that are lubed and/or replaced.
So I shouldn't need to worry and I am not going to mention my upgrades in the rear unless it needs to be.
