Default How can I tell for sure if the diff is LSD or open?

If I'm just looking at a pumpkin, how can I tell if it's open diff or vlsd? Guy says it came from "he believes" an enthusiast 6mt, but he says it is an open diff. Either he's wrong about the model or wrong about the diff.

Anyway, just by looking at pics, is there a way to tell if this is an open or lsd FD?

very simple if its out of the car.hold both axle stub shafts and spin one of them, if both spin the same direction it is a lsd.

I believe you could use the VIN number to figure out what model it is.. Or invoice any documents.

it's a viscous lsd - the fluid needs to heat up before the LSD action is present

if you have the axle stubs with the diff, you can measure those. The short ones are a non LSD rear the longer ones are for the LSD rears. Otherwise I don't know of anyone to tell just by looking at the pumpkin

This is not always true......I've seen many open-diff cars do this.

when my car was on the lift i rotated each rear wheel seperately. they rotated the same direction same speed. leading me to beleive its NOT an open differential.

well i do know that when i took out my early 2003 5at rear, you could spin one side and hold the other side still.with the 2003 6mt rear i got you couldnt do that, they both spun in the same direction.

All I can do is look at the pumpkin in a few pics out of the car. If it turns out to be an open diff, I can just swap my lsd from my G into the new pumpkin I guess. I've got a guy at work that rebuilds diffs, so if there are any complications from the swap, I can take it to him.

Ok, got the diff a couple of days ago. When I turn the companion flange, both RH and LH side flanges turn in the same direction simultaneously. However, if I do this and grab one of the side flanges, it will stop turning as long as I hold it kind of tight. If I turn one side flange, the other one spins in the opposite direction, just as my current VLSD rear end on my car does now.

Is it safe to say I have a VLSD?

I'm gonna say no it's not safe to say because you definitely aren't able to create enough force to heat up the viscous fluid to lock the diff that would be seen under road forces at speed

I'm not quite sure, mine in the garage when I turn a side flange the other side turns with it. My other one which is an open does the opposite, turn side flange and the other side tuns the opposite direction.

What about when you turn the drive shaft?

When I spin one wheel on my current diff, it turns the other wheel in the opposite direction, and it's a VLSD. I haven't spun my drive shaft to see which direction they turn.

I may give Turbo Toys a call tomorrow and see what they can tell me.

Here's an idea and you are sure to enjoy it. Drive in ever decreasing circles at WOT!!! If the inside wheel spins its **** off, you have an open diff. If it doesn't you may have an lsd, rooted clutch, bent rims, gutter rash, a ticket from the cops, a bad hair day, no friends, or all of the above.

how many times in one thread do I ahve to say THAT IS NOT TRUE!

You can lay down stripes with both tires on an open diff car, it's not that hard!

on the car: If car is in gear... both will spin the same way with OE VLSD

on the car: If car is NOT in gear... wheels will spin in oposite direction...

off the car: spin one stub axle the other will spin in oposite way...

off the car: spin companion flange, stub axles spin same direction...
