How did this happen? A wrist pin cannot "come out" unless something else catastrophic happened.

Then the retaining ring for the wrist pin failed and it came out. The wrist pin was found in the oil pan, somewhere. It can come out due to be being defective.

So, the wrist pin came completely out of the piston while the piston is still in the cylinder? Where is that flag....

Well Mr. teh215 if you want to build a time machine and shrink yourself down and go inside my engine while it happend you do that then come back and report your findings, otherwise you dont know for sure what happend and this is the most probable cause.

From what you were saying I thought that you knew for certain that the wrist pin backed itself out once the retainer came out. Sorry to hear about the mishap. What other mods do you have?

No mods, except muffler, car has 6200 miles on it (When it happend). Nissan denied warranty due to abuse, its cheaper to build the car than pay a damn attorney. Last time i buy a new car.

This is the factory engine. Built Z Motors is doing the engine build, on a new 9:0.1 compression engine. Thats where the pictures were taken at. The best guess is the wrist pin backed itself out. But the piston did come off of the rod.

The connecting rod was probably the first to go ... Either way, sorry to hear. Good luck with the new motor. What else are you doing to it?

Limited Slip first, 18x10.5 rims in the rear hopefully, then a large single turbo. This wont be for a year or so though, have to save money after the engine build. I swear these things cost just as much as porsche for parts.

n/m I see that Nissan denied the warranty. I would call NNA and let them know. What abuse did they cite for the denial...

Wow, that is some nasty damage. Good luck on the engine build, you should have gone to a different dealer though.

NNA was of no help, the service manager convinced them to deny it. Its flagged in the computer now. They said it was abuse but thier "offical cause" is the muffler.

+1 , with something as big and as costly as an engine, I would definitely exhaust all my options before paying anything out of pocket. Call NNA as someone else suggested above.

edit: just read what you wrote about NNA above. Can you possibly take it to another dealer?

THE F-ING MUFFLER!! Oh, I would so love to take them into court and hear this explaination. But, like you said, it may be cheaper to rebuild vs. getting a lawyer. I guess if you were going to do it sooner rather than later...but still.
