Default Defi VSD Concept Install Info

Hi Guys,

Just wanna share something with you that I learnt the hard way. Some of you might already know this, but for those of you who don't and was stuck like I was and wished there was a thread regarding this issue, here it is.

It's regarding the Defi VSD Concept. The main purpose of this is to display your RPM and Speed, but I think by now you guys should know that the 350Z does not have an RPM signal and Vehicle speed output from the ECU. This is where I got stuck while I was installing the Defi VSD Concept. OK, the speed signal was easy. I tapped it straight off the white/brown wire going into the Tachometer. Rip out the whole meter section and you'll see them. Speed pulse setting on the VSD is 8 by the way.

Now for the best part, the RPM signal. The only option I had was to tap from the ignition coil wiring to the ECU. I tapped the 1st coil wire and the rpm reading was kinda funky. I tried all 6 and it didn't work. I even bought the Greddy e-manage 6 coil rpm extractor and it didnt work, had strange readings.

After a week of fustrated fiddling, I decided to give Defi Japan a call, cos the dealers are mostly useless in this case. I found out that tapping the 1st coil wire was correct, BUT the Defi VSD Concept DOES NOT SUPPORT single coild RPM readings (ie: 1 cylinder). The minimum cylinder you can select is 3.

THE SOLUTION:

You'll need the Defi Link Control II ver.2 (very very important, it's gotta be Control II VERSION 2) This unit lets you select single cylinder and it will read the 1st coil wire signal correctly. So you'll need to wire the RPM signal to the Defi Control II ver.2 and (with a 2nd speed/tacho cable) the Speed signal to the VSD Concept controller... and BAM! Chicks will never look at your Speedometer the same way EVER again!

Let me know if you guys have a better way. I'd be happy to hear from you!

PS: For the second speed/tacho cable, you can use the pivot ones too, they work)

what about sensors for temp, pressure for water, oil etc... that unit can replace all of the space occupying gauges, right?

yup, totally! all you have to do is get the DEFI sensors. The information will be displayed on your windscreen.

I'm old school. I still got the VSD II and was wondering if I can install that in the Z or I guess I need to sell it.

the old skool VSD was independent .. right? i.e. no input from the Control unit.. if thats the case. then u wont be able to pull the correct rpm signal off the ecu..
