Default Driveshaft question?

Would changing my drive shaft to something stronger and lighter be beneficial? And if it is how will it benefit me. Also where would I get one and how much will it cost?

The Z already comes with a carbon-fiber composite driveshaft standard on all models. I am not sure if anybody makes a lighter, stronger one. I haven't seen any.

The big weak link in that arena is the half shaft, those will go WAY before the drive shaft. Then the next link is the diffy, but the stock diffy will handel some decent power.

If you want info on the half shafts look up drive shaft shop. The diffies, there are WAY too many to list. Do a search to find what will work for you.

yea, if u upgrade urmotor, and start making sum serious power, and like 2 launch ur car off the line, the driveshaft shop offers i think 2 upgraded shafts, including a 500hp version adn an 800-1000hp version

Sorry forgot to mention I have a G35. Does that make any difference?

Will that also help lessen drivetrain loss?

I have a G35 Coupe as well and ACPT made me a custom drive shaft a little over a year ago...

ACPT has been working with race teams for several years and they have a great deal of experience with carbon drive shafts.

In our testing, we showed a gain of aprx 5% over the stocker… Lower rotational mass, more strength than the stock steel shaft (aprx half the weight), less driveline shock (which helps reduce stress on Drivetrain components), an increased traction and no driveline vibration that we could pick up on… Revs are quick and effortless… Plus there is some safety benefits as well… If a u-joint or yoke fails the carbon fiber drive shaft will disintegrate, while a metal driveshaft will tear up your car and can cause some severe damage to both you and your car…

Here are some pics... 3 3/4 inches and good for 1200+whp!

Then after you're done beefing up your drive shaft, next on your list is a call to Sharif for some of these Level 5 axles...

Now the transmission is the weak link... funny, there's always something...

So how much was the drivetrain and install. And should I be beefing up my axles? Because I only plan to get 300hp+ out of the wheels and want something that is going to give me less drivetrain loss while still keeping stock reliability(or even improving on it?).

I wouldn't really bother with upgrading axles unless you're addicted to the drag strip.

And 300whp is not exactly "crazy power" ... the stock axles should hold if you are launching properly

If you want less drivetrain loss, lighter flywheel and lighter wheels would be the way to go

I am auto so flywheel isn't an option. I am also content with the stock wheels. I thought that if lighter and stronger driveshaft is at a fair price then it maybe actually worth it.

a carbon fiber driveshaft will run you about 700 dollars, but its not worth it to me on a G35. too much money for what its worth. you can get an aluminum driveshaft made for under 300 dollars that will weigh about the same and might be worth the money..

dont worry about breaking it, you arent going to do that...

+1. Members with forced induction do break parts on the drive train, but usually not the drive shaft. The weakest like appears to be the rear axle. If you are concerned about a stronger drive train, consider an aftermarket rear axle.

Weight reduction is always worthwhile.

300 is a fair price. Would installing it be pricey? And will this be better and give the same reliability of what a stock G35 has? It also occurs to me that the 350Z has a lighter weight driveshaft compared to the G, would the Z driveshaft work on the G and would that be a good option? Thank you.

So the Half shafts are comming with all the CV's now? Hope so, I just think its a pain in the @$$ after spending $1400 on parts to have to mix and match crap from used stuff.

cheap and reliable seeing as I only want no more than 400-425hp and just want something that is more effective and helps more power get put down to the wheel.
