For drag racing it is a must.

For road racing - it depends on how and what you are driving. For a momentum car - it is more ideal to have an open differential since you don't want any type of lock up and you will just be maintaining a constant speed around a corner. Yet, a Z is not a momentum car, it is a horsepower car - and thus a LSD will help exit speeds since you want to get on the power earlier in the corner and have it hook up with the road.

For the street - it all depends how you are driving. So for spirted driving, where you want to launch from a stop or put the power down in a corner - than you need a LSD. If you don't do either of these - a open differential is for you!

And the VLSD that comes stock is a waste of money IMO for racing or spirted driving. Go with a Clutch or gear type LSD!

Don't the aftermarket units make more noise compared to stock units?

From what I've read all but the Quaife are pretty noisy.

My Cusco does not make noticable sound, well only sound is from the tires chirping (since at pre-set 100% lock).

Not sure about the Z with a Quaife, which is why I won't comment on that.

But from other cars with Quaife LSD's that I have driven, no noise and very smooth.

VLSD is not much more than a glorified open-end that adds weight to the car and eats power, with a slight advantage of allowing you to exit corners faster.

Unless your friends have quality aftermarket units, they can't really talk smack without exposing themselves as dumbasses. It's up to you whether you want to upgrade to a quality unit and put their VLSD to shame, or just ignore their stupidity.

My Z hits the rev limiter consistantly with no LSD. I do 1-2 shift and the car goes straight to redline . BING,BING,BING. I think the LSD would eliminate this as it will be giving both wheels equal power. Also on tight curves it feels as if it is slipping out. Not so good at speed.

an LSD has nothing to do with the rev limiter - if you are spinning your tires, through 1st and 2nd, get better tires

Sooo.. I found a good deal on an OEM VLSD. I'm trying to figure out if I want to go that route or go all out with the Quaife. The different in price is literally double.

I don't track the car, but I have lot of highway and back road driving to get home and I do drive very aggressively.

Will the OEM VLSD be enough and keep me happy?

LSD LSD is 1 of the best MODS i got for my Z. i have a 03 base. when i was launching without lsd my car will be goin side ways it was a bit scarey. after i got my NISMO LSD it grips so nice. still goin a bit side ways but its kinda goin straight feels a lot safer. in turns and corners it feels a lot more safe that u have both wheels spinning. now that i have turbo i think the LSD was 1 of the best investment i made. btw it does make noise. just step on the clutch when u makin street turns and u wont hear it. GOOD LUCK with the choice you make.

I have a 03 base I finally got a Nismo diff into. love it, soo worth it, the car drives completely different adn you will need to spend some time on your favorite roads relearning how the car responds. it is disconcerting at first how the car reacts to throttle inputs but when you go into a corner and step on it and the car pirouettes and just blasts out you will see the benefit.

and when making turns (like 90 deg. DD turns) you won't be sitting there spinning in the rain.

also, even just driving in a straigh line the car feels like it is more secure, tracks straighter and is less floaty.

I would recommend it to 100% of the people. I also have the HID upgrade not as worth it but the car looks cooler

reason I bought base was because the vlsd sucks imo (and the base was great deal!)

depends on your style. I love the Nismo (comparable to Cusco but I heard cusco is quieter)

Nismo Nismo Nismo. Just sayin that cause I have it and I love it. who cares for the noise just step on the clutch or rip it through the turn and you won't hear any thing. You'll only hear it makin a turn goin about 5-10. Highway, track, drifting you won't be hearin much cuz its high speed. Btw motormouth I just picked up my HID too ! Does make the car look so much better. I only got them cuz it was only 150. I aint payin full price. I love my new HID'z and nismo lsdo and turbo and watevaz else I have. haha. Good luck with the lsd.

After doing tons of research on this topic, I narrowed it down to Quaife since it's the only gear driven LSD with next to silent operation. I'm getting mine installed within a month and I'll give my impressions then. Just remember that clutch type LSD's wear out and chatter. You don't want your date thinking your car is breaking apart while you pull into your parking spot at that restaurant, hahaha.

I hope I'm not too late in replying to you. Drivetrain gurus might chime in but I'm pretty sure you do NOT want an OEM VLSD in your base Z. For the simple reason that all the VLSD equiped Z also have the ABLS (Active Brake Limited Slip) to assist the diff in controlling wheel spin. ABLS applies some brake to a spinnin wheel to slow it down and transfer torque to the other wheel.

I'm pretty sure the VLSD on its own won't be able to cope with the power the Z can put down.

So, get a "real" aftermarket LSD or keep the one you have and just tell your friends you like the car as it is. I haven't heard any complaints from you personnaly on the diff you have now? Keep it.
