Default Rev Limiter

Hey guys,
I'm new to the 350Z and was curious about the rev limiter. I was just wondering what exactly this does (if anything)? If so, what RPM do you guys have it set on? Thanks

There are two totally different things here.

Rev limiter: built in limit that prevents you from running the engine too high. If you downshift into a lower gear that goes past this limit...bad.

Shift indicator: does not affect the engine in any way. It just used as a visible reminder/indicator of when to shift. Where to set this is totally up to you. To be honest, I cant even see the damn thing flash when I'm driving.

Yea I'm talking about the shift indicator (the little red thing that flashes). Thanks for your help.

The rev limiter cuts the spark to the plugs. It is ON at 6,600 RPM.

Is it 6600 on the 06 as well? My dyno sheet goes up to 7k and my revs were about that high too if I remember correctly.

I think the shift indicator setting is one of the most useless things on the car. It would be great if it really was a rev limiter, then you wouldn't have to worry about valets f***ing around in your car. As a shift indicator, I really don't even notice the little red light when I'm driving. I have it set for 6700, though, because it starts flashing a couple hundred RPM early.

The shift light you're referring to is just an indicator to let you know when to shift. You can set it wherever you like. I set it to 3800 RPM during breakin to remind me not to go over 4k for the first 1200 miles, after that I set it to 300 RPM before redline to help me nail the shifts when running it WOT up through the gears. Some people don't use it at all and set it to above redline so it never comes on.

Just remember that whatever you set it to the red light will actually started flickering @ 500 rpms before the desired setting. It will turn solid red when the RPMs match the desired setting. So if you set it to redline (6600) the red light will actually start flashing @ 6100 and becom solid @ 6600.

I don’t redline my car too often so the way I have it set is kind of kool if your econo driving. I have it set at a little over 3k rpm, so that when I hit 3k it starts flashing and I shift. Thought I know when to shift, I know this way I won’t go over and I save some gas. You guys say you never see the red light but I see it just fine. I’m 5’9” either it’s my height or the way I have my seat height adjusted. Another kool thing about setting it up this way is in 6th gear going 3k rpm’s your hitting 80mph and it starts flashing so it reminds me that I’m going too fast on interstate highways etc… Call me a ***** but I get great gas mileage this way. I reconfigure it if I’m going to do some spirited driving.
