Dipstick Picture please
ericjackson - I am aware that the car is supposed to sit to check the oil =P It was more disbelief that my car's oil level could be low that caused me to doubt the dipstick reading.
Especially after reading about people that have had oil consumption trouble etc...Sometimes you just doubt yourself and want to err on the side of caution.

The Z's dipstick is the worst ever. I could see you having probs. w/ it. Just wait about an hour after shutting off the car and check it then. For some reason it seems as thought the oil takes longer to drain down into the pan w/ this car. Good luck and don't worry about the flamers...cuz...well..they're flamers.

1st the dipstick is fkn retarded to get out and put back in so you worry that you might have hit the dipstick as it's coming out or whatever. *I have a G, but I'm guessing it's exactly the same on the Z*
2nd My oil level was so low I was only getting streaks of oil that ran from the H mark to the tip, but I wasn't sure if I was full or just getting residue on the dipstick. A picture could have helped at the time. I ended up pouring in a quart to see what it would do to the oil level and it turns out that I was dangerously low. At the time I figured if I was reading the dipstick correctly and I poured too much oil in, I could just drain a little out. Luckily (or unlucky I was running low) I made the right choice, but again, if I would have seen a pic of what the dipstick looked like, with the oil on, it probably would have eased my mind a bit.
**I have to add, I have had several cars before this one, and changed my oil etc...you always worry especially when it's a newer car that you're not familiar with. Not all cars are exactly the same..my .02**
So Jedicowboy, why do you want a pic???
I don't have a picture, but if that helps, cool...

To all of the other zit-faced teenagers on here driving their first real sports car and having multiple my-space browsers open, that have posted in this thread...thanks for nothing.
This is my seventh car the third of which to have only two seats. I do all of the maintenance work myself, but like to know exactly what I a doing first.
All of these people talking about low oil in the '06s, having a poorly designed dipstick and dealers not fessing up to a problem got me thinking that it would be great to see a picture of what the proper oil level looks like on a Z dipstick. I have read the manual cover to cover and the picture in there sucks.
Some of you need to loosen your skintight neoprene shirts out there. This should be an information forum. Not a chatroom. Get a life. Also, because of the all-knowing jackasses on here with the sole intention of boosting their post counts the search archives are full of posts telling people to use the search engine. Go over to corvetteform.com if you would like to see how a real forum works. People sharing information and actually contributing. No disrespect to the mods here. I understand that is just a different crowd.
jedicowboy..
I can snap a pic tomorrow if you still want to see this. But like others have said here, let it sit for a few hours (I check first thing in the morning) and then check it.. it’s a lot easier to read this way…
and yeah, some of the guys here can be real morons, but its seems to be the norm to have some clowns patrolling the threads looking to make an a$$ out of people (or better yet themselves), but for the most part, this place is excellent for information and assistance.
nice Vette btw...

I agree though, the dipstick sucks. It is very difficult to read. My recoomendation is run the car until your oil is up to operating temperature. (Oil takes longer to warm up than water, so don't go by your water temp gauge.) Shut it off, wait ten minutes, and then keep taking readings untill you get one that you feel is accurate. A good rule of thumb is, if there is only a little oil, its probably transfer. If there is a lot with a little missing, some probably scraped off. It's still a pain in the neck to read.

To OP, you should be able to get a good line across the hatch marks on the stick if it has settled and the level is good.

Thanks for the input everybody.
I just want to set the record straight that I am not some kid with a co-signed car that doesn't know how to put air in the tire and then would drive on a flat rim. I know quite a bit about vehicles, have worked on my C5 Corvette quite a bit. Not just changing oil either. We are talking suspension swap, rocker arms, intake and even some electrial work just to name a few. I am by no way an expert mechanic. I do enjoy a good Latte every now and again though. I prefer Seatles Best to Starbucks though. I do know enough to ask a question about something that I am unsure of too. ie:reading this pos dipstick.
Not trying to be a troll...
cheers
