according to BMW, burning 1 qt. every 1K miles is normal for their 3 series.

Like I said, I dont beleive the b.s. dealers feed their customers. Mechanicaly speaking, a 4 stroke engine should not burn oil. Dealers, however, usually dont agree with that statement and try to tell their customers their car is running normally.

Peace!

I have a 2003 Auto and burn 1/4 quart every 3K.

It might be "normal", but that don't mean its "right".

I am a life-long gearhead, and an engineer that spent a career designing, building, and maintaining machinery. With the standard tolerances on a street driven engine, it should not consume more than 1 quart every 4-5000 miles.

My Z is the first car i have owned in 20 years that required any oil between changes.

mine is a '06 track, the maufauctory date is 04/06.
when i first have the car, the oil gauage stays at 60psi when it's warm. however, after 5000miles on the car with no hard driving, the oil gauage reads 15 psi when it's warm!!! checked the oil level using the "pin thingy". it looks fine (since i don't know if i read it correctly due to the complex design) i know normally the oil level should be between L and H.

Just wonder, if i don't add oil to it, how bad will it damage the engine???
and will it have any difference on driving (performance)???

VQ35 should be just like the VQ30, ZERO oil consumpsion. I would not believe the dealer at all. One leak down test showed oil is getting by the piston rings. Compression test was still good though. I don't know HOW Nissan released this motor with the problems, they need to recalled them and fix it. I don't know if all VQ35's have the piston ring problem but I do know it is one of them.

This problem with this engine is why they developed the new one so quickly. They are just trying to pass it off and not deal with it. Sad for sure. The engine is one big defect.

i have an 06rev-up and i just finished my oil consumption test, and the results were the seals in the short block didnt get proper lubrication which was causing the car to drink up oil like a drunk... cause i too was burning two quarts every 1000 miles... but i'm getting my new motor this upcoming monday... thanks to nissan... this is becoming more of a common thing on the 06rev-ups.. Nissan's advice to me was to beat up the car and not baby it for the first 7500miles, so that the seals get proper lubing... all i can say to that is HELL YEA

The problem does seem to be related to the MT+rev-up combo. Btw - I drive my Z hard, and in manual mode all the time; shifting only when she is rev-up to 5500RPM+
I have the 06 Touring 5A/T also. Drive it HARD in manumatic all the time and don't have any problems. I use Amsoil synthetic that is supposed to be replaced every 7,500 miles but I do it before then.

I'm sure if it's related to oil consumption or not

today, I drive my car just like normal in the morning. (shifting around 2500rpm)
However, after the shift from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, I heard some tickling some from the engine...~ Is it caused by low engine oil or sth else???

I should have read up more on this problem before buying my 06 base mt,and raymondcleung,to answer your question, running your oil low damages it in the long run due to too much friction and extra unwanted heat, and in the long run will affect performance along with other upcoming issues later on

^^^^

I had been on here for a while and watching the problems go away and figured an 06 would be a good bet. Actually, except for the oil consumption issue, it is perfect. The problem is the one issue is major.

+1 on that statement big time.

I figured with the 2006 year model, that all or most of the bugs would be worked out by then.

Some issues were or at least in my case, seem to have been resolved from the '03-05's but I guess there is a give and take for everything.

Some people think that loosing 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles is acceptable.

The average miles per year on the average daily driver car is figured out to something like 12,000-15,000 miles.

That's 12-15 quarts of oil going out the exhuast every year.

or

3 to 4 GALLONS of oil each year going out the pipes.

Tell me that's normal.

Normal for a 20 year old Honda CR 500 running 24/7 perhaps

Other than the oil issue I have and the cheap a$$ paint job, the car is kick a$$!!!!

Hmm. I have it even worse. I had mine delivered in May and already have 12,000 miles on. I have been going to the dealer way too often for this and they still do nothing. All the regional consumer affairs guy does is refer to the dealership. ARGH!

glad i joined this board cause i honestly would not bother checking just cause the fact that its a brand new car,but from what i read so far this issue is just ridiculous, only thing i can think of fighting with the dealerships to do something about it or maybe get enough people to where nissan corp will possibly consider a recall or something like that, and I rushed to get my 06 while I could due to the style and motor change for 07

I first discovered this problem (it burned about 2.5 quarts b/w oil changes) on my 03 coupe, took it to my dealiership and they said it was normal.. I got home and disoovered it was normal because they added some new oil.. Went to one more dealiership and they told me the oil burning was normal.. So as you can imagine i was pissed of by than.

So about 8 months ago i drove to a 3rd dealership(about 35 miles away) and while i was there i spotted an Ultra Yellow GT roadster. I fell in love and traded my coupe in for the roadster (expecting no problems). Now my roadster has 6k miles and its the same problem. Nissan is doing the oil consumption test now for evidence... Wish me luck..

Anyways the bottom line is, they never check the oil levels in the cars and they think we are morons. At the first delaership (where i bought my 03 coupe) the service manager told me that oil doesnt change color in between oil changes. Ohh i was mad, to say the least.

I have done my own oil consumption test on my 03 base for the past 2 oil changes. the results are both the same, 2 1/2 qts consumption by 3000+. My buddy is a nissan master tech and he told me to try and get a new motor out of nissan cause that is a problem with the vq's. The only problem is i have to take off all my mods before i decided to do that mission. $$$
