Winding noise when car is cold after diff and tranny service
Hey guys like the tittle says, Im getting a winding noise when my car is very cold, and I just got my diff and tranny service done recently on my 03 performance at around 58K,, i know I know,,,,, I waited too long to do the diff and tranny service, but the fluids were inspected at 30k and were clean as anything. Here are the weights and types of fluids used;
Trans-----synthetic 75w90 4.75 quarts
Diff-------reg 80w90 1.75 quarts
The right 4 and 5 ratings were fallowed as per the factory recommendations, so that was it. But now when its cold out in the mornings, I get a slight whining sound that never happened before, then it goes away totally,,,, any suggestions on what it might be??? maybe too thick of a trans oil??? let me know
thanks

Just came out of nowhere huh? Make sure there's actually fluid in these components.. Even experienced mechanics get side tracked some times..

With the winter already here, it does get pretty cold and windy, and the wind noise can get awfully loud. My friend's been whining about, saying it's too cold and windy.

Trans fluid looks alright, not too thick, and so is the differential fluid. Maybe you haven't been paying attetion to the noise before, and now you notice the noise because you're paying attention to it? What brand of fluid did you use on both? On the tranny, did you use API-GL 4 or GL 5? (GL 5 is not recomended.)
The amount of fluid used on the tranny seems too much - I used 3.3 qts on the tranny before it started to overflow and drain out, so if you use 4.75 qts, that's way too much.

Bump. I think I may be experiencing the same problem. It's whining/winding down noise. Only when it's cold and when the engine warms up, it goes away. It's usually in 1-3 gears.
I didn't think it was a problem, neither. But I do hear it when it's cold and having a thread about it made me begin to worry. It's ok. I'm getting a new transmission anyway.
Fluids checked out ok, I mean I dont know, we have been getting some weather in the 10-15 degree range here in NJ, so im stumped,, and yes the weird noise is in every gear until the thing warms up, then its silky smooth!! Also its def a noise that I have never heard before, its relatively loud, so I know im not hearing stuff. I noticed it the morning after i got the fluid change. hmmmm I guess i'll double check everything, or wait for warm weather to see if that has something to do with it.
