Crank Hub Material?

I am in the process of making a crank hub for my 350z. I am just wondering what material people would suggest? Note that this is a hub similar to that of a ATI superdamper, not actually the pulley.
I am thinking that I want to avoid aluminum as I have seen some ripped out keyways. So I am looking at 4140. I don't know if I would need it to be heat treated (which would be a pain to machine) but I would expect that annealed would be more than strong enough to prevent the keyway from ripping out.
Can any material specialist give me some input?
Thanks in advance
