Unhappy Battery Problem?

I recently purchased a OPTIMA yellow top.I was not aware that the post were different then stock. So I installed the Battery crossing the Neg.and Pos.It was hooked like this for about 5 Sec.now that this happened There is a Burning smell coming from the engine bay the battery is not hooked up like this as of right now. When I tried to hook up the old battery the same smell re-appears.What type of damage could I have done to my car, what should I do to see if there is any damage. It looks like I might be with out my car for awhile any help or info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Does it still start and run properly?

Most Stereo Install places can extend the leads that way you can use the Yellow Top.
