My Nissan dealer recommended switching at the first oil change interval. The only reason for this was because there was little point in doing so earlier as the oil in there was perfectly good. You'll probably hear lots of opinions on this.
I switched primarily because it does provide better engine protection, especially during extreme cold weather startup conditions.

funny i just for the first time switch to syth. today after 8,200 miles and let me tell you its runs so much smoother that it is very noticable. as far as when to switch to it is basicly up to you. I used mobile 1
After I switched to synthetic my car ran like a cool Mountain stream cascading down the Rockies in the spring time--- Ah --- Oh , With birds singing the joys of life and the chipmunks and racoons frolicikng after a long winters nap.
i personally think it doesnt matter if your a stock car i switch like at 8k miles but i switched because i went TT. If your car is going to be stock then dont even worry for while after 50k plus miles then start thinking about it. Also it matters if you drive the car hard or not. Normal oil is perfectly fine people just used synthetic when you do performance upgrades and you need a more resistance oil. Because more heat builds up. Im no expert but look at those old *** sentras or crx's from the 80's some are still runnin without not engine rebuild and have over 150k on them with using regular oil.
