Ok about to do my first oil change. was wondering what oil filters you guys are using. OEM Nissan part from dealer or aftermarket from auto parts store? If aftermarket a part number would be really helpful since those reference books in the store are never up to date. Thanks!

I used Nissan's stock filters but got the one that's about 1" longer for more filtering. When removing the filter for the first time be aware that it has been tightened down with alot more torque than you're expecting. Damn near had to tear mine off to remove it.

Try using the filter for a 2000 Maxima - I believe it is 7317 (Fram part number). I just put it on my 350 and it is about 2 times the size of the stock unit, but fits perfectly!

If using a filter that is about twice as big wouldnt it be smart to add a little bit more oil??

Nevermind my previous thread. I guess more oil would be required than if using a smaller filter but all that would be needed is to look at the dipstick (Which if you change your oil you should!).... SOrry for the stupidity of my last post!

Yes, I did add a little more oil. Basically, I added another .25 qts My honda's filter is about the same size as the 'larger' nissan filter and it calls for .5 qts less if you do not change the filter - since I am adding 1/2 the volume of the larger filter (the smaller filter is about 1/2 the size) then I figured an additional .25 qts sounded right.. and seems to be right on the dipstick!

I am using the K&N oil filters.

I use the Fram filters and Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0W-40 -- the same oil I stick in the Boxster S, 911 Turbo, etc. I never see any problems with it. It seems like a blend of Mobil 1's "Fuel Economy" and "Performance" Oils to me

Anyone else have good experience with this stuff?

K&N HP1008- nice because you can use a 1" socket on the end to tighten/remove it.

If you are set on using OEM filters, get the larger of the two (15208-9E000). I took both apart and was shocked to see how poorly constructed the smaller of the two is. In addition to being woefully small, the 15208-65F00 filter element is glued between carboard end-caps -- really crummy if you ask me. (For pics, see my post on the subject in the General forum) The best oil in the world won't do much good if the filter doesn't do its job. Even the very best full-flow car filters are poor at removing particles smaller than 20 microns. I haven't figured out why car maufacturers have not started to use high-efficiency bypass filters. Trucks have used these for years, and that's one of the reasons truck engines easily last for 1,000,000 miles.

Found this Oil Filter review link on another forum. It's somewhat old and he never got around to testing the K&N but still a pretty good read.

The K&N HP-1008 wasn't in stock at the local auto parts store and it was going to take a week to get one, so I ended up using a Fram Tough Guard TG-6607 and Quaker State 5W30 for my first oil change.

I'm definitely disappointed with the cardboard endcaps mwaller found in the Nissan filter. Doesn't sound much better than the Fram Extra Guard.

I put in an Amsoil filter (SDF-13) when I switched to Amsoil 10W-30. From everything I read it is very high-end.

Very expensive though, for a filter. 13 bucks. However, the recommended service interval is several times that of regular filters, so I guess it evens out.

i read some reviews and it said it was about the same as mobil 1 and bosch, but it was alot cheaper, 3-4 dollars
