Default New transmission -> Weird shift pattern

I got my transmission replaced a few months ago due to grinding on my 2004.5.

I noticed that my shift pattern is weird compared to the old tranny. Here's a little diagram.. excuse the poor imitation...

Old tranny.
1 3 5
|__|__|__
| | | |
2 4 6 R

New Tranny.
1 3 5
|___|_|__
| | | |
2 4 6 R

There's more travel from neutral to left side than there is to right side. This is pretty awkward especially when shifting fast. Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: wow.. that came out crappier than I thought. I'll try again

Old Tranny
1--3--5
2--4--6--R

New Tranny
1---3--5
2---4--6--R

so the distance between 1-3, 2-4 gates are longer than before?

I did not notice that and I went from a 03 - 04.5 - 06 tranny (currently)

When the dealers replace the transmission they don't bother to adjust the shift guide plate, there is a DIY adjustment on this site you can find. Look in the DIY drivetrain section.

Mine just got replaced bout 2 weeks ago with an '07 Tranny. My gears actually go in quicker, they're closer to each other..you should definately take it back and let them know.

Just looked in there, couldn't find it. But I'll search around.

Richy350z - having experience with the dealerships, I wouldn't take it back. I rather do the DIY as the dealership has more than once screwed up a lot of things while in process of fixing. I have a bit of mechanics background as well. So DIY shouldn't be a problem...

Ok, I checked the service manual from *********, looked simple enough.

I took it apart myself. Here's a quick write up... sorry for lack of pictures!

1. Pull shifter console up.
2. Take off shift **** (Follow FSM for proper procedure to prevent damaging transmission)
3. Take off leather and console
4. Take off the white fuzzy thing (for sound insulation, you'll see it, it's right under the console)
5. Unbolt metal bracket
6. take off rubber piece
7. take off 2nd rubber piece
8. You'll see the shifter guide there
9. Loosen the shifter guide (3 bolts, one in front of shifter. one on bottom left of shifter. one in bottom right.)
10. pop gear into 6th
10a. Move guide plate to the bar piece on shifter so it lines up. Fit it loosely, dont push it all the way to the shifter.
11. Tighten bottom right bolt
12. Put into 5th
12a. Repeat 10a
13. Tighten top bolt
14. Test 5th and 6th gear, make sure they fit through properly. If not, readjust.
15. Tighten bottom left.
16. install in reverse order.
17. Enjoy proper H-shift pattern.

I did it this afternoon, what a world of a difference it makes. But I did bend the side of the shift guide from all the time I kept forcing into 5th and 6th. I had to bang it out. If you have a bent one, bang it carefully, it's made from very weak metal and I cracked mine a bit.

Driving Impression: Unusual at first since I got used to the weird shift pattern. But the 5th and 6th gear goes in a LOT more smoother and like butter. Before I had to force it in and occasionally I had to use two hands for the 6th gear (which resulted in bent shift guide).

When I first got my new tranny 5th gear felt like it was in a different spot also.

I tryed to put it in to gear and it felt like the shifter would just hit a brick wall. I never had a chance to bring it back into the dealer but after driving it about 2-3,000 miles it feels good again. I'm not sure if I just got use to the new location or it "broke in". Either way I'm happy.

I had the same issue. I got my tranny swapped, and when I finally got a chance to drive it, I noticed that I could get it in 1st - 4th, but 5th and 6th were a struggle. I could move the shifter from the middle position (between 3 and 4) to the left to access 1st and 2nd, but I could BARELY move the shifter to the right. 5th gear was 75% blocked, and 6th gear was like 95% blocked. Anyways, I took it back to the dealership, and they adjusted the gates so now I can access all gears easily.

i just had my tranny replaced yesterday and have the same issue, but i'm not going back to the dealer, hate those f'ers and they hate me for no reason, tried telling me that nissan told them that they'd be willing to replace the tranny only once under warranty. then i called nissan and they told me that wasn't the case. so i told the dealer that, and he told me they wouldn't do anything there, i'd have to take it to a different dealer. i'm gonna call and complain to nissan today about that ***. the rudest bastard i've ever come across
