Default reverse lockout not locking out

just a quick question. I have an 03 performance 6mt with just over 48K on the clock. i know that you SHOULD have to push the gear shift down before you are able to shift into reverse. but in my car you dont have to, in fact it makes it harder to shift into reverse (if you can get it in gear at all) when you push down. i have only found one thread that anyone even mentioned the lock out but the OP didnt have my problem.

does anyone else have this problem? its really not a huge deal to me but i would like my car to work as it should. my question is what all is involved with getting to this "lock out" and is it a cheap part to replace? im an aircraft mechanic and i have been turning wrenches on cars/trucks longer than i care to remember so i think i should be able to handle swapping this part as long as i do not have to get inside the actual trans. i do have an extended warranty but i also have a $100 deductible. so unless it cost close to that or more ill be trying this myself. any pics or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd argue that this is a drivetrain issue, screw deductable, and get a dealer to fix.

i hear ya but the only thing i have read is the lock out is only a few bolts. not worth spending a 100 if its a 20 fix...IMO

i had this happen right after they installed my new tranny. I think it was just an alignement issue or something. Take it to the dealer...should be an easy fix...

Probably the brass shifter guide plate is misaligned... I doubt it is a mechanical problem...

the shifter guide plate has a small cut-out for Reverse, so if it's aligned properly, you will have to push down to shift into reverse. If it is not aligned properly, then there is a little bump on the shifter that is supposed to "catch" on the cut-out will not catch.

Sorry I'm having difficulty describing this. If you take apart your center console you will see what I'm talking about.
