I still change at 3-4000. Yes i run Amsoil. And yes i know i'm throwing money away. But it's piece of mind. I do alot of stop and go. And i can afford it! See now we both can get flamed!!
A lot even state 7.5k. It has to do with better machining. Smoother, cleaner cylinders/walls, etc = less crap in the oil. Could have something to do with better oil additives too, but I think the improved engine production processes are really the key to this.
edit to add: Of course I change well under 3k even as I hit 6 months before I put 3k on and don't like the thought of old oil in there.

Manufacturer recommended oil change intervals under "normal" driving conditions are usually at 7,500 mi, and under "severe" driving conditions are at 3,750 mi. Description of normal vs. severe driving conditions can be found in the owners manual.
That said, I have been changing oil at 5,000 mi intervals (using regular Pennzoil) in all my cars for 25+ years with no problems at all.

I have a loaner 07 right now and the display maintenance period is 7.5k miles on the navi info screen (as someone else said, this is most likely the suggested, minimum "normal use" interval). For those that drive the car harder or under more extreme conditions, then I believe the 3-4k mark is still the way to go.
Not to sh*t on anyone's parade, but if you own a daily driver and change your oil out less then every 3k miles/6 months you are wasting money and unnecessarily contributing to environmental pollution. My .02

Dont hate on our fellow jap friends but Honda's cars now come with a built in oil life gauge. It goes down in % i beleive as you drive so when you need an oil change it will display your oil has turned to ****... in so many words of course, cool feature though.
Many German cars have a much higher oil capacity than Japanese or domestic.
In theory, a 50% higher volume can double or even triple [100% more volume] the useful period, especially when these manufacturers require full synthetic fills.
Careful with small capacity engines and extended change intervals when you drive in a sporty above average manner.

all i know is i change mine at 3k or less. whether technology has advanced or not, i baby mine i guess. it looks like **** when it comes out and thats all the reason to change it. everyone runs their engines 5k or more on the same oil and wonder why their engines dont last as long as others. of course there are exceptions but in my experience it leads to engine problems regardless. if you change your own, look at the oil when it sits in the pan and tell me you think it would be smart to run that through your engine for an extra 2-5.5k miles? IMO **** no. treat the car with some respect. if you cant afford an oil change every 3k then get rid of it. your disrespecting the car.
