Sounds like a blown up synchro, mine did like you described at least. Where is the sound really coming from? If the rear it could be somehow possible the cv joint is bad, check the boot for rips.

today morning .. i went in aride to check my car... all gears engage ok but third wont go... i can put it in third but when i press gas the revs go high as if no gear is there.. so i took it stealership and they said that have to open the whole gearbox to check what happen...
