??? Who has the houdini 5th gear ???

My 5th gear feels like it grinds slightly all the time. When racing (not powershifting!) twice, my car has been stuck around 5th gear but not in any gear once or in 3rd gear. I had to let the car cool down then muscle it out. This has happened with 3 tranny's Ive had, my latest one is a 009 version.

I wish Nissan would just beef up the damn synchros instead of throwing new (flawed) tranny's at us.
Mine was replaced under warranty about a year and a half ago, and luckily no problems yet. I have an '03.

Im having this problem in third gear! I just bought this car used (2003) and Im pretty sure that this cars warranty is up. Does anybody know how much it would cost to replace just the synchro as opposed to a whole new 009 tranny? Also, you guys think I should take it and try to buy a warranty since it should clear inspection and then turn it in? Thanks for the help guys!

i'm getting a grind in 3rd gear on my 2004 but its not as often as all of yours. I grind 1-2 times a week when going WOT and the grinds are horribly loud and hard and i feel like the gears are getting so much damage because of this.

If you search this site you will find thread after thread regarding this topic. The earlyer year 350s have all sorts of syncro problems. Do a search, do some research, and then go get a new tranny on nissan

I have an 03' with 22000 miles on it and I had my tranny replaced at 17000 miles due to 3rd gear grinding. Now 5000 miles later my 5th gear is grinding occasionally...I don't do anything that would warrant a bad synchro, but do you think I should take it to a dealership and see what they can do? BTW the 5th gear grind only started happening after I recently got my engine replaced under warranty as well for a piston ring problem.

Mine was perfect, I mean perfect. Absolutely no clutch or tranny issues at all, smooth as silk, then ................................ I had my engine replaced for oil consumption. Now it "appears" the new engine does not consume, but still too early to declare a victory, but 5th gear has moved on me. Used to be a solid "over to the far right and up" and it was right in gear. Now, I come out of fourth and if I do that I hit a brick wall, won't go anywhere. I have to come out of fourth and "barely" move to the right and up. Oh well, hopefully they can adjust this. Get one thing fixed and another crops up :-)

wierd that someone else has had their engine replaced like me and 5th gear is not right anymore...it also felt like the clutch was tighter when I got the car back after the engine replacement...

my 03 got a new trans under warrenty in 04. its the second version, which i think is the 006?? i have this 5th gear scratch if i shift into it too quickly at lower RPM. If I am racing it doesnt seem to do it much, but getting into 5th when racing is a ***** for me anyway, always takes me a second.
I have thought about getting a new trans, but I am not gonna do anything about it until I actually loose functionality. I powershift this thing countless times every day I drive the car and I am just thrilled that I can slam into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th without lifting throttle and its still taking it with stride. 5th gear is the least of my concerns so I will just deal with it.

Yeah, 5th should be less concern as 2nd & 3rd probably look like someone pt on drunk goggles and took a die grinder to them......good luck with that. Hope you have good friends or free tow service

I am right there with everyone... my original tranny (2003) lasted 23k miles, the 2nd lasted 8k miles, and the 3rd now has lasted about 13k miles and 2nd is getting hard to shift into, 5th has always been kinda "weird" like maybe not lined up just right or something. The other day, I decided to drag race a couple of times (1st time on this new/3rd tranny) and speed shifting from 1st to 2nd at high rpm would grind a bit each time, until about the 4th or 5th time it just hit a brick wall and wouldn't even go into 2nd at all. If I drive slow and Mrs. Daisy'like it seems to work ok, just notchy. Honestly, only my original transmssion was really smooth, the other 2 have been notchy and crappy since day 1. I still have about 6-7 months left on my powertrain warranty I think will just gety #4 installed for free and sell my car before transmission replacement becomes my own liability. Now I gotta figure out what car to buy next, preferrably one much higher quality with less rattles, vibrations, and smoother shifting.

The dealership told me to bring it back in about my 5th gear...that the shifter plate may have been misaligned when they put in the new engine...Could that make grinding noise? I know the grinding is the synchro, but could it grind cuz its misaligned?
