??? Who has the houdini 5th gear ???
Those of you who have it will know what im talking about. I know I have it. I'll be drivin in the morning and everytime I go into 5th gear it has a short grind, but if I shift slow theres no grind. I thought hmmmm......maybe it just needs to warm up, well as it warms up it goes away whether I shift faster or slow................................for the most part. But them all of a sudden when it feels like it poof it will have a short grind in 5th gear if I shift quickly and the next time it wont. I know there are others who have this problem.......im just wondering how many others

hahaha, I know exactly what your talking about. I have the same exact thing. I dont think you could have described it any better.
I was supposed to take it in for that like 3 weeks ago.
I think they just replace the synchro,
or maybe the whole transmission (hopefully)

yeap. its the synchros. obviously, if you shift slow enough, itll engange no problems, but can eventually cause further problems. but shifting relatively fast, forces it to engage, hence the grinds. thats the teeth getting chewed up. i found this out after me and my friend (a transmission specialist) dissected mine.

I think it may have something to do with the driver. I have had my tranny done twice already, hopefully this is the last. I had the same issue on my mustang, 5th gear But the grind would happen after the car was warmed up and driven for some time, and it was a v6 I think this is the result of skipping gears. I would giver in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, then just skip to 5th. I no longer skip gears when shifting.

I think there was an actual fault with the tranny design thus why there are several revisions that have been made. I still blame the tranny itself more than driving habits.
It is a known problem with the Z (especially the 03, don't know about the later years) and that's why many of us on the boards have been able to get a new tranny replacement.
