Anybody do a 5AT tranny fluid flush/fill?

Easy to DIY? I do most all the work on my car (BBK, Vortech, springs, sways, exhaust)

I did mine, but the tranny was out of the car while I was having the VB and TC upgraded.

You can only do a drain/refill and my understanding is that you actually will only replace a small fraction of the total ATF volume. The dealer has a machine that pumps in 10 new qts for 10 taken out (a true flush). I believe it cost $199 total, including the expensive matic-J fluid. This was well worth it IMO.

So on the G forums, the guys say it's bad to do it at a high mileage, if you haven't done it regularly since day 1. Your thoughts?

When I wrenched, it was the same everywhere. If a car came in with higher mileage an no maintence on the tranny, we were reluctant to do it. After all the wear, the fluid gets so many particles as compared to newer fluid and it's these particles that actually keep the tranny functioning well and from slipping. Drain it and sometimes it isn't good cause you've removed the "friction material". Since your not going to take but a few qts. out, I think you should be good. I don't know if i'd completely drain it. Different opinions on this but, this is my advice. You also can't do a complete flush as was noted unless you use a pump. Still, it's better than nothing. Theres a plug on the bottom of the pan(looks just like the one on the oil pan. Crack it open, drain, and refill through the dipstick which is hard to get to on the G. Bend it out so you can access it easier in the future. Hope this helps.

ps - put 1/2-1 Qt ATF in your engine. It's great detergent. Seriously.

You can use the cooler lines to do the flush yourself. The procedure is in the factory service manual. You can also do some google searches to find how its done, very easy to do. I also recomend dropping the pan and cleaning the magnets and the stuff on the bottom of the pan too.
