So did anyone have any idea of a ballpark cost for the new tranny from the dealership if you're out of warranty? I know Z1 motorsports sells re-built trannys for 1k, but I would rather get a new one if it's not too much more expensive. I plan to do the work myself. Anyone have any input?

This is only a guess... but I would think a "factory new tranny" goes for around $4000 plus a "book" 5 hour install (@ $110 per hour) puts it close to $5000.

Only a guess though since no one has paid for this service yet.

Is the extended warranty through Nissan? If so, that is a very costly warranty that should cover this problem.

Clearly the problem you describe is not due to abuse; and, a worn clutch has nothing to do with this.

My dealership didn't contest the transmission replacement. If there is another dealership nearby, you should go to them and ask for the transmission replacement. "Another dealership nearby"... well heck... at the price of a new tranny, you could drive up all the way from where you are to here (Frostbite Falls) and have the tranny replaced, and still save a boat-load of $$'s.

My car has 65k on it and I got the best extended warranty that the dealership had and it was through nissan. I am going up there today to talk to them about it. If they still wont cover it, I will end up calling another dealership as you suggested.

I keep (erroneously) saying 5yr/50K drivetrain warranty when in fact it is 5yr/60K warranty.

I remember that the extended warranty for the Z through Nissan was very expensive (almost twice what the extended warranty costs for the big and complicated 4-wheel drive Armada ). It is disappointing to hear that Nissan disallows legitimate claims (the tranny problem is a known fault). That certainly won't be helpful selling an expensive extended warranty. Please keep us posted on your efforts dealing with this problem.

Has your car been in an accident/crash that was recorded in an insurance company's database?

Nope....when I talked to the service manager at the dealership, he told me that the extended warranty is not worth getting and that nissan will do everything it can to get out of covering anything under that extended warranty. I have called nissan multiple times and each time they tell me that the syncro is not covered under the extended warranty so I guess its time for me to get the parts and do that work myself.

Well crap... The Nissan Extended Warranty for the Z is very expensive (by far the most expensive extended warranty Nissan sells for its cars). It seems odd that they are replacing tranny's with little argument, but refuse to help you.

The only thing I can figure is that everyone is getting it fixed while it is still under the 60k warranty.
