It's not the answer to all your questions but it helps.
I had come across that a while ago, forgot about that page. Does help to confirm the list I had posted even though it only addresses Nissan and not the Infiniti applications. If you look at that, this is a list of FD's that would fit, with some level of modification in the Z's diff. I think R200A designates front axle in 4WD applications as it uses a shorter pinrion, but R200 is open diff, R200V is VLSD.

1998 4WD Frontier XE/LE/SE (front) - R200A - 4.363
1998 4WD Frontier XE/SE (optional) - R200A - 4.636
2005-07 2WD Pathfinder - R200 - 3.133
2005-07 4WD Pathfinder - R200 - 3.357
1997-98 240 SX -
R200V - 4.083
2003-08 3507 6MT - R200 - 3.538
2003-08 3507 6MT - R200V - 3.538
2003-08 3507 6MT - R200V - 3.357

Just making an educated guess, but ring gear and pinion should be interchangeable regardless of VLSD designation or not. VLSD has a bigger bearing on the axle stubs. I'd also wager that the 3.133 and 3.357 ring gears are the same thickness and are thicker than the others. We already know 3.538 and 3.917 are the same thickness and we'd have to look to see if they all use the same ring bolts, which I think is 12mm. All information you should be able to get from the respective FSM's. Pinion length is the other thing on my mind too. Just because its a 200mm ring, doesn't mean the pinion will be the proper length.

Its all nothing knew, Courtesy Parts has been selling these pieces for the 240 for a while.

alot of times, things show up under the Z platform on thier website that are for other cars... suspension parts, etc. I don't know if it means they KNOW it will work with a Z or a glitch or something else.

helldorado, I'll get the 4.08 FD and be cooler than you

(we working out tonight?)

No matter what, you're still cooler than me. I'll be there at 7.

I want to talk to Pat about this. Dude knows a lot about gearing. I think he'll have some good insight.

they are not all interchangeable by any stretch of the imagination and vary widely in their fitment requirements

^Agreed.

I had looked at rear diff parts from J30's a few years back and there were too many differences for them to drop into a G/Z diff. There may be something that I'm overlooking, but if that's the case, so are a lot of other people, so I don't feel so bad.

Now with the inexpensive Central 20 gears available, it's a much cheaper and easier to just swap those in. We just got another shipment in and as soon as the shims arrive, I'll have a set in my 07 diff.

So I was right? My nismo was misprinting the 3.7 as the 4.0?

Yeah, I spoke too soon on that. I did some extra research and in addition to the pinion lengths varying from application to application, the spline counts and a number of other factors can change since there are a lot of little variations of the R200. I was talking to a Nissan contact I have who does a lot of gear work and he still felt that he could get just about any combo to work given the right parts. I'm going to give him the parts leftover from my pumpkin rebuild and we'll might do some experimentation given the proper time and access to parts.

Do you have a 07? If so, let me know how the car feels after the 3.9FD, i've been thinking about that mod for a while now.

I have an 07 and I'm just waiting on some shims to arrive in, then I'll be switching over to the 3.9's .... probably will happen sometime late next week.

I was going to wait for a new hlsd that's coming out, but that's still a few months out, so I'm going to install the 3.9's now and then I'll drop in the new diff once it's available (probably around the end of the year). I don't really want to do the labor twice, but oh well.

I believe West Covina Nissan or Performance Nissan is testing it... I spoke to one of them about my 3.692 and they thought I meant 4.0 (which is listed as 3.7 somewhere)... anyway they said they were testing the 4.0X

yeah, and his car was reving much higher than expected at speed for a supposed 3.7 fd. At a given speed it is higher in the revs than the 3.9's???
I wonder if they figured out what was going on. Seems like those are 4.0 or better.
