if anybody else has done this how did you align the pilot shaft with the clutch assembly?

Disconnect the drive shaft at the differential, pull drive shaft out. If you're replacing the clutch you will need an alignment tool to align the clutch disc with the pilot bushing before tightening down the pressure plate. If you can get a pilot shaft from an old transmission they work great, if not most part stores have them.

according to the service manual, if there's play in the u-joints, replace driveshaft lol. So there's no factory approved method to remove them.

4 bolts hold the DS to the rear end. Remove these. Lower the back of the driveshaft enough to slide it back. The front of the DS will slide out of the tranny. To line up the clutch, you use a clutch alignment tool. Your clutch should come with one.

Bumping an old thread ... what's the trick to getting the four 17mm rear bolts loose on the drive shaft? I cannot for the life of me get them to budge and there's no room to get an impact wrench in there.

I used an extension on my impact to get those loose.

Yep, I finally got them off with a long socket wrench and a swivel joint.
