i need some help guys, i recently installed a b&m shifter in my car and i am currently using the factory **** and the **** rattles on the shifter. i called b&m and they told me that it is a sacrifice to buying the shifter. so ive tried thread tape and noting works. does anybody have any ideas as to how to get rid of the rattling?
thanks
thanks
My same issue with the B & M. I have one on my Firebird and no issues ... But, for the Z it vibrates like crazy. If you get a rubber **** I'm told that all stops. I don't like they way they look and the Z shifts pretty short stock. So, I returned mine. You can check the vibration if you take off the ****. If that whining/vibration sound goes away.... well, there you go. Most probably you have already done that though.
Now, the adjustable NISMO shifter is supposed to be the ticket. No vibration etc... I'm thinking on trying one of those myself. Just haven't gotten around to it.
Good luck ...

I'm still new to this (3 weeks with the car) but why did you get a short shifter? I dunno if my 35th anny is shorter than stock, but I thought I had a small enough throw as it is.
How much shorter is it? Is it worth it even with the rattle? (Sorry again, still new to these cars)

not all short shifters for the Z are bad. I personally run a Stillen in my car, and it's terrific. Chebosto runs the B&M in his car as I recall, and likes it.
The rattle is not at all related to the shift ****..it's the install

Rouge Engineering's is great, only 20% shorter throw compared to stock; which is not as much as the other short shifters out there, but it's silent! My stock one rattled with my NISMO Ti GT ****. The Rouge does not! Great mod, IMHO.

what could have i done wrong on the install to cause the **** to vibrate so much? im new to the import scene to begin with so im just trial and error right now. but thanks for all of your insight everyone i greatly appreciate it.
mine used to buzz/rattle. then it went away after i replayed with the mounting plate (the bronze)

i used the Nismo Ti GT **** and now Clint's SS **** from Forged Perf.
been using it now for over two years no major complaints.

thanks for the info, i just went ahead and pulled the the shifter back out and replaced the bushing where it connects to the linkage with thicker nylon bushings than what b&m supplies and went ahead and used a little but of dynamat to help out and it works great. i appreciate all the insight.
I can never resist B&M threads and laugh when I see how trashed the shifter gets by folks who probably don't know the secret of how to install it. I've had my shifter for over 2 years now and, with my Vortech SC, is the best mod I've ever done to the G35 coupe.
The shifter is built much more solidly than most of the others--both a blessing and a curse. Because its pivot housing is machined metal rather than plastic like stock and most of the others, it's very beefy and precise but tends to rattle. There's a gap between the black metal cup and the metal hollow into which it fits in the tranny housing. This sets up vibration and metal on metal rattle. I did two things to 100% eliminate vibration, noise and any even slight slop in the shifter.
First--take off the brass and blue top plates, pull up the shifter and wipe grease off the top of the black cup--then wrap 1-2 two tightly stretched layers of electrical tape around it. This is very easy and doesn't require removal of the entire unit. The cup should still move freely up and down in the hollow after you thoroughly grease it up. Stuff some simple sound insulation in the inner and outer rubber boots for extra quietness.
Rattle can also form between the top of the metal cup and the underside of the blue top plate. I just put a few pieces of foam tape in the underside of the blue plate (not too much or the tang won't stop at the brass adjusting plate but go under it).
The last step is critical: you've got to get a heavy shifter **** to stop the natural resonation in the whole system. This gives the shifting a fantastic, smooth feel and eliminates any noise at any RPM. I went with the Rado--a 1 lb shifter thats easy to install, looks great, feels great and is height adjustable. I set it on the medium height which shortens the B&M about 1/2-1 cn--just perfect. You will love it.
