Default Oil change: out of curiosity

Have you guys ever bought your own oil but brought it to a shop to do the change for you? The place i go to doesnt have Castrol 0-30w which i want to try. Is it strange to bring your own oil to a shop, and will they even do it for you? I mean, how much can they charge you just to do it?

I think it just depends on the shop. I have brought my own oil to a few shops before and they usually dont have problems with it. You should only pay for labor, however most times it usually comes out a little more expensive if you add it all up.

i have no problem using a customer's own oil, and i work for a dealership. As long as it is the correct oil, i will put it in. if their vehicle takes a specific oil and they bring in something waaaayyyyy off i might say something to the service advisor and see if we can put something better in their vehicle.

I brought my own oil to the shop and they still wanted to charge me the same price as getting a oil change with their oil.

The local stealerShip will install whatever you bring em here, so long as they explain the warranty requirements. Either way Royal Purple is good for Nissan, the charge is about $28.00 for the service, and they usually do a 27 point inspection at the same time.
Although I am going to start taking my Z to the local Infiniti dealer here, better service and they are not dicks!!!!

Most shops frown at you bringing in your own oil because that's where they make the small amount of money. The labor costs usually goes the mechanic/tech doing the change. So the $6 a quart they charge you for $3 oil is the gain. The only reason i would see the dealer being "ok" with any oil is the fact that they want you to come in just for anything so they "can" hit you with that lame *** 27 point inspection. That way they can rack you up a $800 invoice on things that "should" be replaced.

Moral of the story, were talking about a jack, 2 stands, 1 bolt, and an oil filter, change it yourself.

I agree with the other guy. Most shops with charge you a maintenance fee for labor which should be aroung 20-30 bucks, because they want your business in the future.
I hve channged my own oil, I have had my oil changed at an oil change place, and I have taken my own oil to an oil change place to be changed. You just have to find someone who is not a dick... Good Luck with your search..

I worked at Pennzoil and usually the price break down went as follows:

$20 = service
$8 = up to 5 qts of oil
$3 = filter

If you bring your own oil and filter it was $20 for service, and if you brought your oil, then it was $23 for filter and service
