future group buy for FI our Z's
A lot of FI kits are getting close to being on the market. It is an exciting time and long awaited. I am 90% sure I will be going either turbo or SC on my Z. I will wait until most have come out so i can compare products and allow them to be on the market enough time to see if there are problems with those products.
I started the group buy from HRE on this forum. We got a better deal by doing a group buy. I am hoping that others reading this are like me and waiting for the best FI kit to buy. What I am wondering is if we start talking, if we can work out a group buy for a product including possibly a tuner (for those close enough together to make that part worth while). As consumers, we have buying power. If we are going to buy something like this, why not use our leverage to get the best deal we can? Yesterday I posted an update of the Greddy TT. In one day, over 30 replies to that thread and over 700 people looked at the thread. If we even had 10 of those people interested in a group buy, we could most likely save a lot of money in something we would buy anyways.
Maybe you can post your general interest in this concept here so we know what numbers we might have. The greater the number, the better deal I am sure we can get. It seems like there is quite a good amount of mark up on these products. I know it is early to do this but it would be nice to get a group started. We could share information. I am sure some of us our more technological in our backgrounds and may be better at picking the best FI options. Some others may be better at negotiations thus getting us a better deal.
In the end, I am hoping we will find a group of us that will decide to get the same product and by our numbers, get a reasonable discount that will benefit all of us. I plan on waiting until ATI and Greddy come out with their products. Greddy claims a fall release for now. If that is accurate, then by fall we can do more research finding out if it is having problems etc. It is not that I am only focused on Greddy, I will go with any product that is reliable and gives good HP gains.
Anyone interested in this possible group buy?

The way it worked out with the HRE group buy is vendors started contacting us. Soon we got the best deal possible. I think the same can be done for a group of us interested in a Turbo or SC kit.
Am I the only one that is really interested in a FI set up or all of you just looking and not really planning to do it?

I'm certainly interested, though a lot of it depends on timing, as well as warranty issues. I know your sig. says that you'll only go FI if you keep the warranty, but I doubt that will happen (unless there's a kit from Nismo), and I don't want to get a new car only to invalidate the warranty right away. But, like most everybody else, I can't wait to see what tuners put out for our cars.

After talking to Greddy and ATI both on the phone, the warranty issue is not what any of us would hope for.
ATI will give a 3 year warranty on their parts (1 year standard and we can pay a small amount for an extended 3 year warranty) but if it affects any part of the motor, they will not back it. If you have read their posts, many people break/throw belts + some problems with bearings and leaking. Some people posted it took 3 months for ATI to rebuild their SC under warranty and they did not return phone calls. ATI looks good to me on pater reading their web page but customer reviews scare me personally.
Greddy does not give a written warranty on any parts and Tommy there said we will help you when it is hooked up but it sounded to me like Greddy did not want to be committed to anything. Their out is that they feel they cannot back anything because most failures are due to people increasing the boost. Tommy said that Mitsubishi will not even give a warranty on the turbo and that they bench test everyone so they know it works.
Both of these promises are not what i would hope for and this is BEFORE the sale. What would happen after the sale if things go wrong? I know some people on line have told me they had great customer service. Other people tell me most ATI installs work find. I do agree that most posts are when people have problems but on the other hand, I feel i got to be careful with my new Z.
I am affraid as soon as there was a problem with the motor, Nissan would not cover anything if a TT or SC was on it. So, doing our homework is a must in this case. I personally do not believe anything as far has warranty unless the company will but it in writing.

It seems like to me if we did a group buy with Greddy that we could negotiate a warranty with them. I think they would bend a little considering the PR we would give them have Z's set up.
Well, when the time comes, I know there would be a lot of people interested. The warranty issues will be huge, and if a warranty is given for a TT kit on our Z, you will not have to worry about getting 10 people, lol. Really, I don't anticipate a warranty for any system other than NISMO, but if you can get one, count me in. A manufactor who would back up his product with a warranty will get mine and alot more money. That should be plenty of incentive.
jeff,
i would be in on the group buy. i think if we negotiate even before Greddy or ATI bring their product to market, we might get a good price. they would be crazy not to want 5 or 10 kits installed across the country on or around the official release date.
I'm psyched.

We got a lot of time to do research on which product is best (I am sure we will be debating that issue!) as well as looking a good price. Since some of us are on the west coast, others on the east coast, we will most likely have more than one installer. That makes it tricky if we go with a Greddy kit because they do not sell directly so we must go with an installer.
I am happy to see a lot of posts and interests on FI on the forum lately. Seems like the ATI procharger and Greddy TT are starting to get closer to being out. My bet is we will have something to put on our Z's by about December or so. This is an exciting time. Seems like it has been so long a wait. We waited a long time for the Z to come out then have to wait more for the real interesting mods to hit the market.

Zrated (or anyone on the east coast) -
Do you know of any Greddy tuners around our area? I know there used to be a place up in Hackensack called Kaztech Motorsports. They seemed to know alot, had a dyno, and there was a machine shop right next to them. Have you heard of them?

350zdanny - I have not heard of Kaztech Motorsports, but I am not familiar with alot of tuners in our area.
I know there are alot of shady places, unfortunately I have delt with one in the past
. There are so many hacks out there!
I hope someone else from our area has some input on this as well. It is worth a longer drive for me to deal with a trustworthy shop, who does carefull work, and is not going to use my car as their driver while it's there. (happened to a guy I work with, who was getting a stereo install)

Someone call Nissan (NISMO) and tell them that we want a bunch of them and see what happens. Pipe dream I know but if they are on the fence about it then knowing that a bunch are sold right off the bat may push them over.
I'm definitely interested in either the ATI Procharger or a TT but I would like to see it out there first so we can see who is going to stand behind their product and who isn't. Warrenty would be huge too.
