I'm not an expert on these engines at all, but for a high performance engine I would be wary on anything more than 150 extra HP. Most engines aren't made to handle double their HP or anything close. I would say an extra 100 would be safe, and I haven't heard much from these being stout engines that will do more. I would be surprised if someone says it's OK to do more than 100 HP without some forged internals.

If he is talking just about the block itself he might be correct. If he is talking about the longblock with stock internals them...um...no. I could be wrong but I think the rods are the weakpoint in the VQ engines. Remember that the engineers never intended the VQ as a forced induction engine so it wasn't designed for that high of power level. Swap in some forged internals and you should be good for whatever you want.

If he want's a bulletproof / bomb proof engine look at thr 4G63t (showing my true colors ). People are running 500hp on a stock engine (w ARP studs).

350whp ~ 400whp (425 maybe) on a stock block should last awhile. Much more than that and stuff starts breakin'. Mainly the factory rods.

at that point, I think you have to upgrade your clutch...

Seriously though, is the question about the block or the internals or the whole package...

For comparison...if anyone remembers the M-Power F1 1.5L inline engines (from the mid 1980's), they were all engine blocks from BMW maintained customer cars (each had a minimum 100,000km's on them, something to do with the heat cycles strengthening the blocks)...with modified internals they were good for 1300 hp in qualifying trim.
