Default Something to think about with engine mods - Air Flow

hey guys, i dont have my Z yet, but i do know a lil about engines. i have seen many posts were people sink money into mods and then go dyno. sometimes their dynos comeback lookin like crap. like TXStyle. he put a Borla True Dual exhaust on his Z and came back with dissappointing dyno numbers. one thing you need to think about, when ever you increase the amount of airflow going in/coming out of your engine, you need to have a balance of both. Like TXStyle, nice mufflers but do you have anything that lets the engine breath a lil better? and the sme applies vice versa. if you put a cold air intake or somethin like that that allows for better airflow, you have to allow the air to leave the engine just as well if you are going to see the real potential of your mod. think of it like a water hose in your yard with a nozzle. you turn the spicket and let water into the hose, but if you dont open up the nozzle, water still wont come out. and vice versa, if you open the nozzle but the spicket is closed water still wont come out. when you open both then you get alot of water. make any sense? just relate the spicket as the intake of the engine, the hose is the engine, and the nozzle is the exhaust. both have to allow flow. i realise that things with the engine are able to change such as an intake increasing HP even with stock muffler but, to really get the most out of your mods, you need to have a lil of both worlds. and as for TXStyle, even if he would just stick like a K&N Air Filter or something on it, it would help. i hope this isnt too confusing for people and maybe it will shine a little light on some people's bad experience with performance mods.

Pop charger isn't for looks, it gains 0.1+hp, that is a gain, period.

I agree with what your saying but, I don't think the stock intake is much of a choke point. It's as straight as a panel intake will ever get, plus it pulls air from outside the engine bay. The 350 doesn't have a glaring weak point, but anything can be improved. I think these mods don't make a large difference at close to stock power levels because nissan did tweak this motor from 240 to 287HP So it wasn't the normal slap on what ever fits in the space allowed deal that most motors recieve. It's just like you said " a balanced design" Once you go way out of design specs then it changes the gains found in mods. Like the ProCharger, it makes 370RWHP with a stock exhaust. I'm sure the borla would make a large gain in that due to the way out of spec airflow.
