I was reading up on some older threads about drilling a 1/8 hole in the throttle body valve to improve the idle on 05 Z's. I was wondering if there were any issues down the road after doing this mod. I noticed that the threads were kind of old. I've been thinking about doing this myself since I stall out every now and then after coming up to red lights on quick deceleration. If you did this mod, is there a step by step procedure on how to do this properly? Also do I need to do the idle position reset when I'm done? Thanks.

just stop by your dealer ask them to bump your idle up.

 

The dealer can't do it unless I get an ECU reflash $$$ from them. The consult 2 only works for models before 2004.5. Trust me I have looked all around and I'm not looking to do an ECU upgrade again untill I go FI. Also I now JWT has a solution but it seems to be hit or miss with that.

I stall out every now and then when coming up to a stop unless I roll into it slowly. My idle will drop below 600 and choke up a little before it climbs back up, and thats with the a/c on. With the a/c off forget about it I will stall. I have seen many Z's with the same problem. Yes I have everything secured tight and I've cleaned my MAF sensor.

 

When slowing down, at what RPM are you clutching in and shifting to neutral?

I know you said had checked..
But I had a similar problem with my idle, it turned out to be the a leak at the TB.. After I removed it and re-attached, the idle problem went away.

 

I have an '05 Revup and the dealer had no issues jack up my idle after they put in a new throttle body on my car. before that, I had my idle raised via the UpRev Cypher program.

 

One dealer (Maroone Pembroke Pines) wanted to charge me $110.00 for dyno time so that he could diagnose the problem then reflash for 500. Weston Nissan said no not at all. As far as RPM anything above 2000 when I switch to neutral my RPM drops fast and goes below 600 causing me to stall out somtimes.

 

IS your car still under warranty?? My stealership blows, but does the right thing for me, sometimes I have to push em to honor the warranty though.

 

Since the ECU controls idle, versus older cars which use a dedicated idle air control servo motor, the problem probably stems from the oxygen/air measurements that the ECU is receiving in the first place.

My suggestion would be to disconnect your battery, remove your Mass Airflow Sensor and clean it with the appropriate cleaner. CRC makes a good one that can be found at most automotive stores. Go ahead and pickup a bottle of throttle body cleaner as well and thoroughly clean your valve and the general area. I did this with my own car. Visually the MAS looked to be free of debris and residue, but the cleaning still resulted in a marginally improved idle consistency.



When cleaning your MAS, be extremely careful not to make contact with any of the leads, as the sensor itself is very fragile.

Definitely try this out before permanently modifying your TB.

Yes like 2 times along with idle reset.

 

I did it to my car, it works great. Like you, I have an 04.5 and cannot raise my idle with consult or with cypher.

 

Cool, can you tell where I need to drill the hole? Also do I have to take apart the throttle body once its off, and what size and type of drill bit did you use?

 

Have you considered a Performance ECU Flash with an idle bump? I say this because with your impressive list of upgrades I didn't see any engine management, and I'd bet a good NA ECU Flash w/ idle bump would both increase your performance (10+hp/tq) and remidy your idle concerns.

 

i was the one who originally came up with this and mine is still working just fine. it is an 03 though. this is normally only a problem when going fi though. the throttle plate itself is brass, which means it would be super easy to just solder the hole closed again if it did not help at all. just a 1/8" hole pretty much anywhere in it, but i did mine near the top. i know alot of fi guys have done this mod and it cured the problem with no side effects. it is the same exact principle of the jwt idle fix.

 

I currently am running a unichip. I have considered upgrading to a Utec, F-con, or Osiris but I'm holding off till I go FI.

 

there is 0 need for this, your car has another problem, so best to solve that problem, rather than curing it by a bandaid. I would have a shop (or DIY) for intake leaks, as well as check the tune as well. I know you said you checked, but with the mods you have, it's entirely possible and sometimes another set of experienced eyes does a world of good.

I also would recommend going through the TPS reset procedure as well, which is in the factory service manual (I am sure its been posted here as well)
