Default Any experience with Fram Tough Guard Oil Filters?

Hi Guys,

Can't seem to find any information here (on the Forum) regarding Fram Tough Guard Filters, so I thought I might ask .

Does anybody have any experience with it? On the box it says that it has the following features:

- 99% Multi Pass Efficiency.
- Anti Drain back valve (so oil does not go back and stays in the filter during starts).
- Gasket is made of silicone and performs very well in extreme heat conditions.
- Screen Over Bypass Valve which backs up filtration during cold starts and adds extra protection against large partials of dirt.

I have a tendency not to believe what the box says as it just marketing crap the majority of the time. It is for this reason that I asking the more experienced / knowledgable people here on filtration.

Many people here do not like Fram but this filter seems to be quite ok (if what they are saying is “realistic” engineering data that is).

Thanks for your help in advance!!

PS> I drive my car in the winter.

FRAM is garbage, I would re-use a Mobil 1/K&N/Wix filter anyday before I use FRAM again.

FRAM and Nissan oil filters are basically made from cardboard.

There a thread on Driver about this.

Mobil 1 FTW. Plus they have the longer filter you can add. Not by much though. I think the number is 110. I might be wrong. Double check.

I was told that the Nissan filters were good. Still know of respectable shops that use them.

I used the frams on my Z before....worked no differently than any other filter I ever ran. The most important aspect in a filter is keeping it changed at good intervals based on your driving style and the type of climate you live in

Like was said above - Fram is like Toilet Paper. Crap. Do a web search and you'll see.

My truck and my wife's car get Purolator and my Coupe gets K&N.

I do not think Fram is that bad.

The concept of the anti drain valve so oil is kept in the filter is very appealing. This is better for the engine when you start it. It is similar to filling your filter with oil when you do an oil change.

If Fram is so bad, then where is the evidence? Have people had any issues with them?

been using fram filters on all my cars never had a problem with any, unless the Z specifically requires a special oil filter I dont see how the fram would cause damage beyond any isolated instances in which the fram filter broke down. which happens in any filters, they are all not immune from manufactor defects. But i probably would buy into all the marketing hype and just go with the k&n for a few bucks extra and for something that comes along only 3,750 miles

I think there's a few Fram versions that aren't too bad. Tough Guard might be one. The base Frams are trash though.

For the $ spend, buy Napa's gold line oil filter. Made by Wix and can be had for very cheap over the net. Esepcially if you buy in bulk. (ie.. 4-6 at a time). Mine came to about $4.xx each. Very cheap compared to K&N and Mobil

I absolutely agree. I have been using Fram filters on all my cars for 20+ years, always changing oil and filter at 5K intervals, and never had any problems. Always using Pennzzoil and Fram, my old 280Z went for 205K+ miles and my old Pathfinder went for 150K (before it was totalled), with no engine problems at all.

I think what's more important than the brand of filter (or oil) you're using are the regular and reasonable change intervals, as Z1 Performance has mentioned above. If you think otherwise, then the marketing hype out there is working.

Too many folks talking out of their butt here, propagating rumors and myths, as usual. Fram Tough Guard and Double Guard are good oil filters, every bit as good as the Mobil 1 that everyone worships. I have a link to the study/analysis, but I see that it has been moved/taken down. Here's another one which just describes each filter. Google "engine oil filter study" and you should get several good reference sites with better info than just asking for opinions here.
