I do all my own maintenance on my Z and my DD, but I figured I'd revive this thread to ask a couple questions.
I was all set to drain whatever coolant I could out of the radiator (since the drain plugs on the block - there's three - are too hard to get to), but then I spoke to my friend, a Nissan service manager, who said that their machine will take out all of the old fluid, and insert new fluid with "conditioner".
Secondly, I was going to drain the PS fluid, and replace with OEM using the turkey baster method mentioned above. Again, the dealer's method was recommended, a full "flush". I'm assuming they add a conditioner too.
The cooling system flush is...surprise surprise...$120, and the PS flush is probably around the same.
I need the low-down here. I'm not trying to cheap out with this car. I'll pay them the money and get over my complex of being the only one working on my car, for the sake of my car's longevity. "Flush" at the dealer, or drain and refill w/ new at home? What's really the best option for the car?
Note that my car has 31k miles and I don't track or auto-X it. Too early to replace PS fluid? Dealer recommends about 33k miles. I'll only replace early it if I can do it on the cheap with the turkey baste method. If it was really due for it, I'd opt for the best choice regardless of the extra cash.

They want $540 for the whole 30k mile service. Typical. Do searches about the 30k services and you'll probably be enlightened.
I don't know if you do your own maintenance or not, but I do. That obviously makes a difference in labor costs.
It has been covered quite a bit, if I recall, of what is really necessary to do at the 30k mile service. I essentially replaced all of my fluids, minus that PS fluid and brake/clutch fluid at or before the 30k mile service. With that said, at the dealer doing what I did would actually cost more than $540.
I haven't really helped at all, I know. The only thing I bring my car to the dealer for, according to my own service plan, are the PS fluid replacement (every 40k) and coolant (every 30k). You won't be able to get 100% of either of those fluids out by yourself. All other fluids have basic techniques for draining and replacement.
Hope this helps to some extent.
If you don't feel comfortable running the power steering pump dry - Another way to flush it is to:
1) Use a gear oil pump, or turkey baster, to suck the fluid out of the reservoir
2) Fill it back up with fresh ATF fluid
3) Drive it around a few miles
4) Repeat steps 1~3 a couple more times
The whole loop only has about a 1 quart capacity. But I wish there was a drain petcock in the loop somewhere~

^ sorry for the necro bump, but doing it this way, do you need to then buy 2-3 bottles of the PS fluid if completely sucking it out each time? otherwise, sounds like you can drain it from one of the hoses, yes?
Thanks!
