Default 06 Oil consumption a problem with AT?

Hey guys, i was doing some research, i had an 05 Z then it was totaled in an accident so i was looking at getting another one. i like the changes made to the 06 from the 05 so i was thinking of going for one of those but have heard about the oil consumption issue, but i also SEEM to have read somewhere that it was only a problem with the Manuals, i was looking at getting an auto because of all the OC traffic im burnt out on sticks. anyway just wanted to make sure that was the case or what you have all heard? thanks!

yup it's supposed to be a rev-up engine problem.. affects mt's, not at's. haven't heard of any at's with the consumption issue.

A small percentage of rev-ups have/had the oil consumption problem. It was a horrible problem for some of those, was a large enough percentage not to be called "rare", too many dealers were not helpful and Nissan took too long to address the problem fairly. IMO.

As said, automatics didn't have rev-up engines and the '06s have significantly better lights and brakes than the previous years as well as some other minor, but visible changes.

I also looked into thiss prior to purchasing - you would be confident in the '06 AT. I went that direction and have had no regrets!

So the definitive reason(s) for the OC has not been identified by Nissan? I read valve overlap timing and soft rings, but not seen anything from Nissan. Anyone have a reference to the real answer?

No recall. They put out a TSB with guidelines the dealer needs to follow in order to make a complete engine replacement claim.

IMO, there are LOTS of MT revups out there consuming oil, it's just that most people who drive their Zs do not care enough to check their oil or anything else on the car. They take the car in to the dealer to get 2500 dollar brake and rotor changes and have jiffy lube do their fluids.

I was consuming around 1qt ever 1200 miles. I had a v2 put in last week. Nissan has imported quite a few of the new engines to the US whereas a couple of months ago they would have to import them from Japan for each request.

Check out the oil consumption thread sticky.
