Welded Diff

I feel that welded diffs are a little low-tech for a 350z. For a 15 year old 240sx that you're going to beat the hell out of, I feel they're an okay investment. I know a lot about them, because I actually spend some of my free time searching for 240sx diffs and welding them. My Z has a Tomei 2-way and I drift it at Club Loose events. The general opinion is that welded diffs make it easy to initiate drifts and they are okay at transitions, but they can be tricky to make minor adjustments with. I use 5/16" (8mm) plates when I weld mine and connect all of the spider gears. If it is not welded properly and it breaks, the chunks will ruin your pinion gear.
Shameless plug: If anyone wants one welded in the Philadelphia area, I'd be more than happy to do it for you.

A welded diff is like having a 2 way lsd and even with a 2way to still have a bit of slip so you can play with. With a welded diff you have no slip what so ever and unless the car is Track Only car, it's pretty dumb if your car is your DD.
Thats just me though, if it rains your @ssed out

just make sure you have good tires and your alignment is straight in the rear and very little toe in at the front. I ran a welded diff in my 240 for 4 years, with daily driving, track drifting, track time attacks, rally cross, and touge time attacks and it ran perfectly fine and driven in the rain and never crashed because of the welded diff.

I did a lot of searching and researching before deciding I wanted to do it...
then last friday I bought an open diff and had it welded and replaced the vlsd.
I thought a few might be interested in the results.
Why did I do it? because was less than $200 and a perfect lock, not relying on mechanics or viscous.
How does it feel when drifting? awesome, kicks out easier, holds a drift easier, is just a whole lot of fun
How does it feel daily driving? absolutely fine, kick it out when I want to, but drive normal when I want to, very predictable cornering
Does it feel weird at all? yes, lol, it chirps on tight turns, gets a bit splashy on a fast tighter corner, but is predictable, you always know what it is going to do
Is it dangerous in driveability? no, I don't feel unsafe ever, I feel like I always know what it is going to do now
Is it fun? yes
Does a welded diff hold or ever break? No. I had a shop called Toy Box Auto do it, they do four wheeling truck diffs that hold thousands of pounds of low geared torque, it will last forever... or as forever as anything can last on a car, ha.

haven't been on the boards in a while, but was looking up my old threads.
Still daily driving and drifting this, drag as well... now a supercharger...
STILL holding and I STILL love it. Sorry to those that think it's ghetto, but I don't mind it at all
