Default Automatic 5AT tranny shut down?

So, I was on my way home from work and decided to take advantage of an opportune situation. There was no one on the road, and the road was newly wet with a very slight drizzle. So, I turned off my TCS and proceeded to spin my rear tires. While I had no trouble keeping the car under control, I did bring the engine to redline. After the wheels stopped spinning, it drove for a few seconds and then I lost my tranny. At first, I had it in tiptronic mode. So, I tried switching back to DRIVE, but it still had no affect. The transmission wouldn't grab, and the car just kept reving. Concerned, I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off. I let it sit for about a minute, turned it back on, and everything started working fine again.

My guess is that I redlined it for too long, and the computer automatically shut down my transmission to avoid any damage. Am I correct about this? Or, is there something else wrong here that I should be concerned with?

I -DID- use the search feature for this. I searched:

"Automatic shut down"
"Automatic lock out"
"5AT shut down"
"5AT lock out"

Forgive me if I should've searched more to find the answers, but I do hope you'll all be helpful and explain the situation to the best of your knowledge. Thanks!

By the way, my tranny is STOCK.

Was it staying in first gear only? You say it like it was in neutral or something.

Happens to me everytime I try to do a burnout with the brake slightly depressed. It won't let you go into 2nd gear, it jumps to neutral.
But all you have to do is shut the car all the way off and right back on, and it's fine.
I took it in to the dealer the first time and they told me not to do a burnout with my foot on the brake pedel. You can hammer it and let the tre s spin till they grab and it will be fine, just don't power brake it.

Thumbs up

Just kiddin', CSF; I'm a firm believer in the "different strokes for different folks"
bit. It's just that, at my age--59--auto trannies are a BLESSING. You go ahead & knock yourself out with your 6MT!!!
