Default Mobil 1 Extended Performance...15,000k?!?!?

I did a search for "Mobil 1 Extended Performance" and even wrapped it in quotes trying to limit my results...apparently that does NOTHING on this site.

Anyways, Mobil 1 Extended Performance is guaranteed for 15,000 miles....is this for real?

I mean, come on, 15,000 miles?

Does anyone who uses Mobil 1 Extended Performance go the entire 15,000 miles?

The reason I ask is because the store was out of 5w30 mobile one (regular) so I bought Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

If your car is still under warranty, and you only change your oil every 15K miles, you risk losing any warranty coverage related to engine oil...

Nissan says oil changes must be done at most, every 7500 miles to maintain warranty coverage.

I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, and I change it every 3750 miles, because I still lose too much oil, due to oil consumption, to wait longer.

I have royal purple in my car right now, and its sitting at 4100 miles on it. Im going to drain it probably tomorrow and get an oil test done on it. And Next change i will run for over 5k, and Test it. And compair the two.

Not a wise move.

Synthetic oil has excellent lubricating properties in hot and cold weather. Another important property is holding and suspending contaminants. And those contaminates can only be removed with a oil change.

It does seem far fetched, but then why are automakers like BMW and Porsche recommending 15k warranty oil change intervals? For instance my Dad's 335i has the factory 15k change intervals (covered by BMW)... he has 33k on the car, done two changes in that time and has zero issues or next to no consumption. There are a few guys using here using synthetic well over 10k that reported good oil analysis results.

What the more expensive synthethic oils get you primarily is longevity. Synthetic oils don't lose their viscosity through shearing anywhere near as fast as dino oils. There is lots of test data for 10,000 mile changes with synthetics where the oil is still in grade.

I personally wouldn't run it 15,000 miles, but it's plausible. I also find it hard to believe the thimble filter on most cars would last that long.

because they are BMW and Porsche and that is how they designed their cars. what works for them does not mean it is good for others.

The # of miles your PARTICULAR engine can go w/o an oil change is more dependant on the condition of your engine vs almost anything else. The only way to determine this is though an analysis. Period.

An oil's ability to go long term is also dictated by it's additive package. Not all oils have packages that are meant for long term running.

BMW/Mercedes have 15k changes because their oil pans hold something like 10 quarts of oil. NOT because their engines are that much better.

Yeah, either way, I'm going to stick with changing it out at 3,750 intervals.

It's no big deal to change it normally if you are using the extended life stuff.
