NISMO LSD... questions
NISMO is offering a new LSD.... questions for those in the know..
1/ What is the difference between 2 way and 1.5 LSD ?
2/ What are the advantages of each over stock LSD in the current Z33 Z ?
thanks...

I dont have all the specs on the nismo differential. But your questions are pretty relative...
1.5 way is only locked on acceleration
2 way is locked on accel and deceleration
1.5way is fine for drag racing or a street car
2 way is good for roadrace, and very good for drift
advantages over stock (i doubt this is a non-clutch type) is the fact that the stock lsd works almost like a traction control, meaning that when one tire starts to spin, the other gets power and starts to spin as well, where a clutch type is always locked together, the only time they are slipping, is when you are at no or very low throttle and they will chatter/clunk, the more clutches, the louder and the more you will feel it, and also the harder it is to break them loose.
I ran a ATS Deftforce (drift 20disc 2way) in my drift prepared RX7. It would chunk so loud that peole thought my driveshaft was slamming into the car or something. but with a slight imput of throttle, the tires would stay locked and it would just chirp the inside tire around the turn (parking lot type stuff).
I also just purchased the Kaaz 24disc diff for my Z. I will be installing it hopefully next week when it gets here. I would not recommend this diff unless you are building a drift Z. The 12disc diff if plenty for anyone. I dont know how many the Nismo has, but my guess is 12-16. Good for a street car, adds predictability to the car, better traction, and if you do 2 way, good lockup on decel.

Sort of. A 1.5way will lock partially on deceleration, while a 1 way locks on only acceleration. With a 2 way, the car can push more than you want it to, so you need to be careful on the ramp angles you choose in the LSD.

Kind of a moot point; there are no gear-type differentials available or even in development for the Z.
Only disadvantages to a clutch-type are having to change the oil and the occasional clunk or pop from the drivetrain. I have the Kaaz 2-way on my car and it's very streetable, streetable enough where my g/f can drive the car with no problem. Around a turn, I can make the back end step out very predictably, plus the car hooks up well in a straight line; it's a HUGE improvement over my stock open diff.
But I would say if you don't intend to be drifting or tracking your Z, there's no reason to ditch the VLSD that comes standard. The sotck VLSD will do just fine for most purposes. It's $~1000 that could be better spent somewhere else in the car.

New Brunswick is about 30min from Englishtown, NJ. Which is where we hold monthly drift events. (Soon to be bi-monthly
