Lost my engine after the track tonight..
Im curious to know what exactly happened, however, with no warranty, I doubt he'll put the time/money into a tear down to figure it out, unless he rebuilds the current motor rather than swapping.

It's a chance you take when dealing online, I've sent 5K+ to a member on here for their turbo kit. Unfortunately in your case this guy is new and doesn't have an itrader rating yet.

no, you need to have them tell you what the hell the problem is. Have them drop the oil pan and check for shavings, run a compression test, leakdown... etc... Don't just take their word for it.

I agree run all applicable tests before taking a shops word for it, I have experience personally with this.
Also, the labor book calls for 20 hours to replace a motor, so 1400-2000 should be what it costs.
