How much is to much?! "Oil Reading" Ranting!

Drain your oil, clean the dip stick. Add the recomended amount of oil. Run the engine for a few minutes, shut it down and then check your dip stick to see where the oil is at. If it comes to the same place on the stick, then the stick is off. Mark the location and keep going.

Terrasmak, you probably mean that the oil level can VARY slightly in our carZ; if so, yes it can. It's important to do the check on level ground, otherwise, the oil "tilts" to the front or to the rear of the engine, giving you a fake reading.
To 4life: What year's your beaZt? If it's an 'O6, do check it more often (oil-consumption
issue); the stealership could be overfilling it to "camouflage" the defect.

Its been said numerous times already, but yes the dipstick is impossible to read. It always says its waaay over the high mark when I know it isn't. When I do an oil change I just drain all the oil, put 4.5 quarts in (you should always put about a half quart less than reccomended) and as long as I know that oil is in there, I know I'm fine. The only time to be concerned will be if/when your oil pressure gauge starts acting goofy.

Check the oil with a real dipstick first thing in the morning after the car has been sitting for some time.Sometimes you have dip it a couple times to get a correct measurment.
