Default 2003 3.3, 2005 3.5 pumpkin swapability

After some searching, I came up with a thread that mentioned a companion flange incompatability between an 05 and an 03...but one was a G35 sedan IIRC

SO my question is are the VLSD pumpkins from a 2003 350z (5AT, 3.3) and a 2005 350z (6MT, 3.5) exchangeable?

If anyone has done this, w/ these 2 years of cars please let me know. I'm just looking to find out if its a direct swap or not....if not then this will save me much aggravation.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: added pic below...reason I'm asking this question

Yes, it is a direct swap between a 5at and 6mt.

would need to swap that flange, which would be too much work IMHO... If I remember correctly, you have to rebuild the complete rear end to change the flange... I THINK! I could be wrong...

BUT, the Pinion's wont work without modification on the 05+ companion flanges, so you must use the 03+ companion flange...

fwiw, there are different part #'s depending on build date. I don't know why there are different #'s but figured it was worth pointing out (I just purchased a new one for my new rear that I'm doing, and came to find out the part # differences the other day)

Yes, there's my problem. I'm unsure of what the difference are.

there's a list of p/n's...and the build dates...

guess I'll just make sure the car I swap with was built before 7/04 to prevent any issues.

That's like coming up to someone, stabbing them in the neck, and going, "oh dang, that's highly uncool. I'm sorry."

Z1, you are correct there are a couple of different flanges since the front of the pumpkin has a couple of different styles. This is why some of the internal bearings are different based on build date.

But having said that, there should be no compatibility issues with swapping the complete pumpkin. The driveshaft will still bolt up to either flange. Now if you are attempting to swap parts from one pumpkin to another there could be some compatibility issues.

actually the inernal bearings are no longer based on build date as they once were - everything supercedes to the later part #'s now as far as bearings go. However there still are 2 different flanges (at least for M/T cars, not sure about auto's, never had a reason to look those up).

Makes sense what you're saying. On the pumpkin I am still in process of rebuilding, we could not for the life of us get the flange off the pinion, no matter what we tried. So, I decided to simply cut it apart, and order a new flange, which is what lead me to the discovery last week. But yes, if swapping complete assembly for complete assembly, it should be fine

Yeah one style of flange is recessed into the nose of the pumpkin, and the other one the flange is flush with the nose of the pumpkin.

I always use a 3-bolt puller and an impact to get the flange off. It has always worked so far

lolol - we broke 2 pullers, let it soa in all sorts of chemicals to try to free it up, heated it with torches...nothing worked at all. Then went to a 20 ton press...and still couldn't get it! No worries nothing a little cutting won't fix!
