Default Life a transmission?

How long should a tranmission last?

I bought a 2003 with 3k miles in 2005. Needed a new transmission (infamous gear grinding when shifiting issue) at 15K, just barely at the end of the warranty and so it was paid for.

Middle of 2007, around 30K, I had the issue again, but intermitantly. It was already out of the 1 year warranty they gave me on the new transmission. It got more and more frequent. In Jan of 08 I finally got it in to the dealer who said I needed a new transmission. When I reminded them that they had just put one in 15K miles ago, he said he would check if the factory would do it "good will". No luck.

I decline to have it replaced, since the car was funcational and I did not want to spend $3000 for a transmission that would last only 15k miles. (Did I mention my father has a 2003 Z that also needed a new tranny after ~20K?).

The dealer said I could call 1800 Nissan 1 and ask them to replace it under warranty. Frankly, I was disgusted and don't even trust my dealer (had the window issue that they never really fixed... adjustments and new motors and re tracking... still rolls down!).

It will be year ago this happend in Jan. and I am kind of wishing I had called. Is this "normal" and part of owning a first year model? Am I right in feeling indignant about all the transmissions issues I've been having? I just don't feel like paying for ANOTHER repair that will only last 15K, I think they should fix it for free even it was more than a year. Am I wrong?

Congrats on your first post in 2 years

I had 5 trannys in my Z in 3 years.
......so I guess they last about 7,000 miles LOL

(I've had version 010 for 2 years now with no problems)

Most transmission "issues" are induced by poor drivers.

20k miles on stock tranny, ever since i purchased car it had the infamous 3rd and 5th gear grind, but only when cold. just replace fluid every 5k miles and grind goes away after 15 min of car warm up.

only way i will replace tranny is when it blows on me at the track.
