We had a pretty nasty weather in NYC last evening. The temp was below freezing and we had the powdery like snow falling pretty thickly. So for my 2003 5AT touring, with T1S tyres (that need replacement) these were less then optimal driving conditions. The recently installed 3.9 rear was not going to be much help either.
My car was in a shop, I wanted to get it to my house in case it really piles up. Otherwise may have gotten stuck in the shop for extra time, taking up valuable space. So I drove it for about 6 miles to my house on streets. They were not yet plowed, no salt trucks, etc.
OK, the diff is effing amazing. Not even a hint of fishtailing when you start driving and accelerate. The rear began to step out very slightly when I had to brake, but it was easily correctible. After about a mile I got so comfortable, I turned off the factory traction control, something I've never done in a weather like this, in ANY car.
The diff is set at 80%, I bought the whole pumpkin, and that's how it was set. It is not 100% silent. You can hear/feel some slight popping when are in slow tight maneuverig, or when one of the wheels begins to slip. It's like, you are driving through the snow, and then there is this pop-pop-pop-pop coming from the back. But that's the only thing you hear, the car still follows same direction. I am assuming that this is where I would have lost it with the vLSD.
In the end, I feel that with a set of all weather tyres, assuming that the snow would not be so much of, to cause ground clearence issues, with the Cusco LSD the car would be a great all year driver.
Now I am waiting for good weather to test it out a bit, but so far, I am adding myself to the list of happy Cusco diff users.
