Question VQ35DE or VQ35HR?

I'm about to buy a Z and just curious if i should wait til i get a little more money and buy a newer year like 07 or 08 with the HR in it i know those motors have a few more horsepower and stronger internals but the one i'm looking at is an 05 with the DE and 28,000 miles and only $16,500 which i think is a pretty good deal but i also plan on turboing it so i didn't know if the HR would be a better motor to turbo any advice would help thanks

If you really plan to turbo or SC. I would say get DE. They are more parts out there.
If you wanna go Super N/A bolt-on I would go HR.

Welcome. VQ35DE vs VQ35HR is a well discussed subject. There is a difference in performance. How significant that difference is to you I don't know.

If you're going to build the motor I would say go with a DE, should be cheaper and easier. If you are going to keep a stock block, then maybe an HR?

I preferred the HR to the DE but I didn't mod them much.

Default HR vs. DE

I am a strong advocate of the HR. The HR has already proven to be more responsive to bolt-ons. My dad's 2004.5 Track 6MT dynoed at 382 at 7 psi at ZCar with headers, OEM cats, stillen cat-back, nismo cams, ATI procharger, and tuned by Rob and his crew. My 08 base will be having stillen headers put on next week, and i have the JWT intakes and Injen SES, I hope to put close to 300 down. We'll see. But my point is that a supercharger + cams on my car would surely churn out more power and response than the former example. I say go HR. So nice in my opinion, but that's not necessarily a knock on the DE. And everyone is correct that there are more hardware options out there for the DE.

well i have seen that the hr seems to be a bit quicker in top end. i would imagine that the de might be a little quicker out of the hole due to more torque. they are both great motors. the only thing i would say is that for 16,500 sounds like it might be a base model which is the lightest out of all of them but doesnt come with an lsd. you can buy an lsd for around $1000 which is probably better than the factory one but if you arent wanting to do that much to the car you may wanna look for a z that comes with one

well are you gonna use the car at the drag track? if so you may not want a touring model since its final drive ratio is 3.3 compared to the other models with a 3.5. if you are not sure what that means basically is that the touring will not accelerate as fast as the other models

The HR engine shows a LOT of promise as far as FI applications, especially if you're considering running on stock internals. While there are less out there when it comes to shop builds compared to the DE, that doesn't make them any less of a contender.

Now that the 370 is out people are seeing new base HRs available for 20 or a little over. I'd say that's a very fair price.

This is a MUCH talked about topic - try a search - you'll be reading all night.

Good Luck - it's really up to you.

"MUCH talked about" is an understatement. Clearly, the HR is the better choice. If you plan on boosting the car and aren't too serious in building the engine (or using it as a daily driver), I am sure the DE would suite your power needs.

I'll respond based on my own experience. I took the cheaper way out, bought an '03 to save some coin. Miles were low, paint was in great shape for South Florida. Happy at first, but after owning the car for a while the wish list started. I wish I had the better performing/ looking bi-xenons off the '06 model. I guess I could upgrade ($700-$900 depending on where you find them) While lighting isn't a huge deal to me, the LED's do look better ($400 roughly for OEM quality.) I wish my door panels weren't a vast amount of nothingness, while the 06+ models have nothing on the 370's, the interior is a step up from '03-05 models. The non brembo brakes on the '06+ models are better then the previous non-brembos. I guess I could upgrade them to perform better ($605 for pads/ rotors/ lines). My factory wheels suck, and while I save up money to buy a set I'll be happy with, I guess it wouldn't be such a pain to look at if I had the nicer 5 spoke OEM wheels that came on the newer models. Reason I bring up these non DE vs. HR points are becuase if you're like most of us. You're buying a complete car, not just a motor. If I'd of spent the extra $ right off the bat, the little things I wish were different wouldn't be costing me money now. Motorwise, I'm not thrilled that when I cough up $900 for the Borla TD I want, that my DE is only going to make another 8whp, while it's HR counterpart responds much better to mods. I guess by the time I do Headers/ Cats/ Spacer/ Intake/ Exhaust and a tune, maybe I'll lay down what the '07s are with exhaust and a flash? If I could do it all over again I'd of bought on '07.

the 6mt are all 3.5 and the autos are 3.3
