Default Trans differences 03,04

I test drove a 2003 yesterday that was grinding 6th every time, so i've decided to go with a 2004 instead. My last Z was a 2004 and there was a huge difference between the trans in my 04, and the 03's trans that I drove yesterday.

The 2003's shifter assembly was 'notchy' and felt like the shifter followed some kind of track. I also had to press the shiftknob in a downward motion til it clicked, then move it to the right and down to get it into reverse.

My 2004 was completely different, the shifter had a little play in it (it could move in a circular motion in the shiftboot while still in neutral). Also in my 04, reverse didn't require you to push the shifter down toward to the floor before you could shift it over and down into R.

Here's my question.. The 2004 that I am looking at has the shifter that moves like its on a track, and it requires you to push the shift **** down before you can shift in to reverse. Since it has this notchy shifter, does this mean it has the same bad transmission as the 2003s?
